Come, James - don't be a curmudgeon.  Most of the posting here is pointless; it can be entertaining, though.

True, but I was criticised for being unhelpful earlier in the thread, when the thread didn't help the OP at all!

Now then, what colour shirt should I wear tomorrow? White or blue?

Good luck with the new camera, but you admit that this thread was essentially pointless.

Hi James,

well I was hoping for more insights on the experiences and individual thoughts why one went silver the other black. Did not necessarily expect the transparent and other nonsense answers. However some thoughts were valid (brassing?).

I figured the question might be of a "light" nature for some heavy users, which is why I had labeled this thread "silly question"....

There aren't any sensible answers to that question, it has to be said - think Deng Xiao Ping, "It matters not whether a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice".  That thought landed him in prison for 10 years or so.

This question crops up quite regularly as it happens. I think a collection of responses should be made into a 'sticky'. People just post their own personal preferences and the OP makes their own mind up in the end.

The key points are;

Chrome - won't brass, very hard wearing, will look much the same in 10 or 50 years time (check out M3's).

Black Paint - will brass and wear easily, or pay a premium for a Kravitz edition if you want to be brassed off immediately!

Black Chrome - won't brass but will wear to a duller slightly greyish look in time with lots of use.

Yes, in that order.

Can we presume that there were mice in the prison?

Probably.

James, you need to add - black is stealthier.  No, silver is.  Umm, people don't notice silver.  Black is Professional!

What about stainless steel, or titanium, or anthracite? white? green? not to mention sandpaper ...

I like them both so I bought a silver chrome after my black...M8's that is... ^_^

It is lovely to have two of the M's...a financial and practical luxury.

The silver-chrome on the M8 is fairly soft.  Much softer than hard bright shine chrome.  I had irremovable scuff marks pretty quickly, after only a month.

The black anodized is an amazing finish...the edge wear can have a nice bronzing look.

cheers Dave S :)

There is one rational aspect: A silver body will match silver lenses as well as black ones, whereas a black body will only match black lenses. A black body with silver lenses looks weird. As you never know what lenses the future is going to bring the body will always have to be silver.
