M8 - first picture 2 hours out of the dealer

I used film Leicas for 25 years or so, and have considered with a mix

of sentiments the shift to digital photo, and decided not to own a

Digital Camera till now, limiting my experience to play with a simple

HP flatbed scanner with neg adapter and PS Lite.

I red in this forum lot of things regarding the problems with M8: cyan drift,

magenta cast, back focusing, coding lenses...

I received Yesterday my M8 and, as a collector, took my little ego

satisfaction being it the first chrome M8 to arrive in Brescia, my town...

Given to my work in IT, my inner thought was "will it work in my very

first shot ?" So i tried quickly: not yet Leica Software installed on

my PC, battery not yet fully charged, JPG set on M8, old 50 Summilux

mounted on, an my daughter Lucia in the home garden...

OK, it can work... now a new adventure starts...

Congratulations on your new purchase. For everything you know about film, there is an equal amount (or more!) you can choose learn for digital :D I say 'choose' to learn, because so many people stick with JPEG and learn nothing. For those who choose to shoot RAW, your learning starts NOW !

Should keep you going for a while...

Luigi,

congratulations on your silver M8, I can imagine your daughter will be captured many more times!

I was in your town last week on business and can still taste the excellent pasta with wild mushrooms I had for lunch:D

enjoy

I am sure this forum will keep you on the straight and narrow, I think I would have floundered without it.

I am a gardener and couldn't identify the white flower in the background, is it a form of jasminum? I would be interested to know, if you know the botanical name that would be great.

Welcome to the forum.

Tom

Ciao Luigi,

Congrats on your chrome M8; I love my chrome body. I think, chrome lenses on a black body look kind of weird but they look great on a chrome body :D. Like Dave suggested, I would choose the RAW/DNG route, if I were you. You have way more flexibility with your color setting than simply relying on the WB of your camera, which I think even with the current firmware, is still a weak area of the M8.

Thanks to all for suggestions and encouragement... I think there is much to learn... at the moment, I left everything as preset on my M8... but saw that lot of regulations can be done... I hope it's only a matter of habit... reading the instruction my first impression was "damn, my M4 is so simple....", but even at the very firs shots I have realized that digital CAN be a new pleasure. As i said, I have not yet installed Software, so my tests, after the very 1st pic of Lucia, continue at the moment with JPG: at least, I have realized that :

1) My beloved Tele Elmarit 90 chrome (1965) DOES NOT backfocus at f4

2) My Elmarit 28 can be coded, and some day I'll send it to Solms, but anyway, apart some vignetting at f4, is pretty usable like it is.

3) Working in B&W, even a 75 years old lens (Hektor 7,3 cm, s/n 129.006, perfect glass) can be appreciable !! That is definitely fantastic.

I do not intend to going on next weeks with all my "curve of learning" results... simply, I felt the pleasure to share in this forum the conclusion that, after 2 days only of M8, I am

really convinced that I MADE A RIGHT CHOICE.

And now... stop to Jpg and go to RAW ! Two small and very different questions to people who has experience with M8 :

1) Generally and simply speaking: is it worth to use the Profiles ?

2) I have an HP Pavilion 17" Notebook Win XP Home with SD card reader embedded: it does not read the SD card M8-formatted (message "card unformatted, do you want to format ?") : USB connection is perfect and very fast, but of course I would prefer to read the card (2GB Sandisk); has anyone the same problem ? Not a problem PC-sided, I think (it can read, say, the SD with my cell phone agenda)

1) That all depends. I personally don't use C1 and the profiles for it unless for some reason I am using a lens I don't have a IR cut filter for and I get the magenta in it.

Some make up Profiles to adjust certain images in a certain way.

2) More then likely it is a card reader built, embedded, into the notebook that is at fault. Try a external (add-on) USB 2 high speed reader.

Your cell phone SD card is more then like of a slower type and smaller in capacity.

Right: I made a very quick test with another 32MB SD from my phone: formatted into M8, a pair of shots, recognized on the PC; thanks a lot for the advice, will find some HS USB reader.
