JT07 Posted May 31, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm looking to take advantage of Leica 12% discount promo and revamp my current lens kit. I currently have the following lenses… 15 CV ver 1 18 Zeiss f/4 28 Leica f/2.8 35 Leica f/2 Cron ASPH 50 Leica f/1.4 Lux current version, most used lens 75 Leica f/2 Cron I'm struggling w the idea of selling the 15, 18, 28 and 35 to get a 35 1.4 FLE Or just selling the 15, 18 and 28 and getting either a Leica 18SE or 21 SE The 50 lux is a keeper but would sell the 75 Cron if needed. My current lens kit was primarily put together when I owned Leica film M's and then the M8. I currently own just an M9P and do not plan on updating to the 240 as I'm usually 1 generation back in the camera game. I'm open to advice and suggestions from more experienced users. Thanks so much. bocaburger Posted May 31, 2015 Share #3 Posted May 31, 2015 I'm struggling w the idea of selling the 15, 18, 28 and 35 to get a 35 1.4 FLE Or just selling the 15, 18 and 28 and getting either a Leica 18SE or 21 SE I'm open to advice and suggestions from more experienced users. Your first scenario leaves you completely devoid of anything wider than 35mm, then you turn completely around in the second scenario and go for ultra wide. Sounds to me like you aren't in touch with what your shooting preferences or needs are, and just have the itch to buy something. That's fine, it's your money. Bottom line only you can decide what you want or don't want, and what your priorities are. If I had your current kit I would sell the 18 and 75, buy a 21 and 90. But that's MY kit preference, based on MY style.
Kwesi Posted May 31, 2015 Share #4 Posted May 31, 2015 Sounds like you are bored with your current lineup with the exception of the 50 and 75. I would go with option 1. The 35/1.4FLE is special enough to get you out of the 50 comfort zone. The 28 is cheap enough it can be added at any time if you feel the need to. I doubt you will miss the super wides. 250swb Posted May 31, 2015 Share #5 Posted May 31, 2015 You need to find something different to photograph, not something to buy. Look in the local 'What's On' guides, do a project, take a tip from another photographer, but unless you know what your current lenses miss out on it's the creativity that needs a massage. JT07 Posted May 31, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted May 31, 2015 You sound more bored than needing a new lens... Just go out N shoot...Thank you for the feed back but Not bored at all. I'm shooting over 5,000 images a year as an amateur. I was simply looking to revamp my current kit and take advantage of the 12% sale.

Thanks for the feedback much appreciated

Steve Thanks Steve, very sound advice and good feedback as always. I've actually been very active shooting and this was more about taking advantage of the sale while at the same time tightening up my lens kit. My thoughts were more along the line of upgrading my wide selection versus investing in the 35 Lux (and keeping an inexpensive wide like the 15th to get me by until I can afford another purchase)
Delcredere Posted May 31, 2015 Share #9 Posted May 31, 2015 The 35 Cron you have is a wonderful lens. I would go route 2 and get the 21SE.
earleygallery Posted May 31, 2015 Share #10 Posted May 31, 2015 Saving 12% by buying a lens you don't need isn't really a saving is it? If you have to ask the question my thoughts are you don't need any new lenses. Wanting something new is fine though. We all get GAS from time to time but if you would have to sell existing gear to fund a new lens, I'd say ignore the sales incentives and stick with what you have. jrp Posted May 31, 2015 Share #11 Posted May 31, 2015 The 35mm Zeiss Distagon is half the price of the Summilux and as good as it gets. I would not bother with ultra-wides on the M9, in the absence of Live View, but the V3 15mm Voigtlanger is a great, relatively inexpensive, lens. Otherwise, you seem to have all the bases covered; faster lenses will be bigger.
M9reno Posted May 31, 2015 Share #12 Posted May 31, 2015 Speaking for myself only of course, I do not enjoy my 35 FLE nearly as much as I though that I would when I got it as a birthday gift almost three years ago. Too big, too heavy, and flares. I prefer my 1950's Summaron 35. I understand that the drop in the Euro exchange rate is behind the current sale. If you are buying in US$ and £ from the Eurozone, then everything including used Leica is on sale. So your choice is wide. I have been thinking about buying a v.1 M3 version of the 35mm 1.4 in this 'sale', and perhaps getting rid of my 35 FLE for good. I know the v.1 flares, too, but at least it's small and light. Good luck.
pico Posted May 31, 2015 Share #13 Posted May 31, 2015 Dump the CV 15mm and get the latest V3. It is a real lens.
Manoleica Posted June 1, 2015 Share #14 Posted June 1, 2015 JT07--I'm amazed, all those lenses, did you ever consider how less choice is more! You come over as "I have a stable of Ferraris" .. But I need the latest & fastest model.. Some less well healed Leica users would die for even 1 extra lens.. I would imagine going on a shoot with you would consist of deciding and then changing lenses & then changing again.. What Fun!! Honestly I think your missing the point.. Honestly I think your missing the point..I'm not quite sure sir why you have come to the table with an attitude and a tone of confrontation. the other replies have been kind and thoughtful. Yours condescending. I AM trying to get to "less is more" and hence why I'm looking to condense my lens kit. If it's important to you as to how I acquired your so called "stable of Ferrari's" which it certainly isn't in the forum that we reside in, the high quality glass was a result of a great man's passing which I mourn every day unfortunately. The less expensive glass (Cheap stuff) was what I was able to acquire on my own. The 15, 18, 28 were all bought used years ago. The total cost was about $2000. Hardly a Ferrari. We are all Leica fans here and a great community. We share encouragement and positive feedback. That's what I've done in every comment I've ever posted or replied with. I'm very surprised you've chosen to be confrontational. My apologies for reaching out to the forum with a legitimate inquiry. I won't make the same mistake again. My apologies to the members here. It seems a little larger than V1 but the reviews have all been very positive.
Manoleica Posted June 1, 2015 Share #18 Posted June 1, 2015 JT07-- in all earnestness, it's not what a lens cost it's how you understand & use it.. Personally I would box up all your lenses except One and use it for 6months, then try another of the boxed up lenses for another 6months. After a period of time I'm sure your technique will improve as will your choice of favorite lens... In the past I have bought cars, cameras and lenses for different jobs..all needed at that particular time. Admittedly I cannot off road with my Challenger or cover certain photographic opportunities with my 35mm Cron ASPH, but Life is simpler and more enjoyable.. I was not trying to be confrontational, just offering another point of view.. G'd Bless Free Speech..

If I interpreted your comments as confrontational incorrectly, I apologize. Again, it touched a nerve regarding the passing I mentioned. I've been down the one lens theory many times in my life. I'm very comfortable with the system and have been a Leica user since a used M3 many many moons ago. I've had "just one lens" for very long periods of my photography life. (over 40 years shooting) and while we are all always looking to improve our techniques, I was more looking for equipment advice in my original post, not photography lectures. There's nothing wrong with that conversation, and I'd welcome it under a different posting but this posting was more about getting some input on the lenses I was considering from those who might have more experience shooting them. I've never owned a 35 1.4 and I've never owned the 18 SE or the 21 SE. My original intention of the posting was more along the lines of hearing some personal experiences with the lenses to assist me in the evaluation. Example JRP suggested looking at the 35 Zeiss 1.4 or the CV 15 V3, Pico suggested the CV 15 V3 as well. M9reno shared a disappointment on his experience with the 35 lux and Delcredere suggest keeping the 35 Cron describing it as a great lens. Perhaps my intention of the original post was more seeking opinions of those experienced with the lenses I was considering, not shooting style or photo theory. All great topics and I'd love to share your thoughts on those in a separate posting. No ill feelings I hope. All the best... PS, I'm a Toyota Camry guy with a Minivan for the wife / kids so the Challenger sounds great in comparison to my cars no matter where you drive it....
