I give up, seems most people here understand now... Wasn't the WATE introduced before the M8 - digital cameras?  Guy
Advertisement Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Hi gvaliquette, Take a look here TRI-ELMAR. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jdlaing Posted June 12, 2015 Share #22 Â Posted June 12, 2015 I don't believe so. The MATE Was. I think all the WATEs were 6 bit coded. Introduced 2006.
efreed2754 Posted June 13, 2015 Share #23 Â Posted June 13, 2015 Find having my MATE six bit coded is preferable if only to automatically record which focal length was used along with shutter and proximate f-stop. Â Wouldn't manually likely change lens size for each shot. Â love this lens when traveling!
Jeff Daniels Posted June 18, 2015 Share #24 Â Posted June 18, 2015 My Leica WATE and MATE (v2) lenses are my constant everyday carry lenses: they go everywhere with me now. The camera body I use with them changes with my mood and/or need. Usually my Sony A7r, or my Leica M9, but I have been something of a late developer when it comes to appreciating these lenses on the Ricoh GXR with Leica M module. I think that, lurking in the back of my mind somewhere, there was a reluctance to use the Leica lenses on anything but a full-frame body. But, once I have got my head around 'cropping' and engaged with the idea, I was astonished by how good they are on the GXR. I've been doing my own comparisons with all kinds of other lenses (via adapters) on the GXR with Leica M Module and I can confirm that the WATE and MATE lenses really are in a league of their own. It is such a pleasure to see stunningly beautiful high-quality images instead of the usual 'digital mush' you get with just about anything else on the GXR. Of course you wouldn't go and buy either lens for the GXR if you didn't already have them, but if you do already have them, buying a GXR with Leica M Module makes perfect sense. wda Posted June 18, 2015 Share #25 Â Posted June 18, 2015 The MATE worked particularly well on the M8.
wlaidlaw Posted June 22, 2015 Share #26  Posted June 22, 2015 Here are a couple of photos showing how it works. Photo one is with the lens in the 28mm position and two in the 35mm position. The 6 bit code allows for three lens lengths with a second controlling input from the focal length position of the viewfinder. This is controlled by the moving tab shown in the photos below. A very common problem on many cameras with this lens is for the shown length in the camera information to stick as 28mm, when the lens has been turned to 50mm. Leica don't seem to be able to get this working consistently on my MATE. I have given up and just turn the focal length control ring slightly past 50mm and then back again, which sorts the problem on my two sticking cameras (M9 and M240). Strangely it does not stick on my M8 or M4.  Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! wlaidlaw Posted June 22, 2015 Share #27  Posted June 22, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I agree with David that the MATE works very well with the M8. Sadly the 24MP of the M240, rather shows up the limitations of the lens at the 28mm setting and f4. The corners are noticeably soft particularly when I compare with either my 28 ASPH Summicron or even my 28-85 Contax Vario Sonnar, when I am feeling strong enough to hump it around.  Wilson
jdlaing Posted June 22, 2015 Share #28 Â Posted June 22, 2015 Try turning the lens nose down when you change focal lengths.
