david strachan Posted May 16, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mr Erwin Puts Lens tester, film and its developing, film vs digital…he tests them all. Considered an expert on Leica lens performance… Maybe sonorous to some; his incisive analysis, and wonderful prose are very nice to read. Here is his analysis of the Leica M8. Any comments on his analysis, or points he makes?? Jeff S Posted May 16, 2015 Share #2 Posted May 16, 2015 This is old news and has been discussed ad nauseam on the forum. A simple forum search will allow you to read for hours…start here... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/5403-erwin-puts-m8-review-part-1/ Puts himself, and his writing style, has also been exhaustively discussed. In case you haven't seen his new site, with many links to older articles, all of which have been discussed here over the years… http://www.imx.nl/photo/index.html Jeff
jaapv Posted May 16, 2015 Share #3 Posted May 16, 2015 But still, nice historical documents, reflecting opinions from back then. Interesting to contrast them with our present-day thoughts.
david strachan Posted May 16, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted May 16, 2015 This is old news and has been discussed ad nauseam on the forum. A simple forum search will allow you to read for hours… Jeff Hmm. As I said in my other post to your same. New to me, and I'm sure many other members. Is there something criminal about bringing up an old post? Please, with the request on his commentary and investigations. cheers Dave S
Jeff S Posted May 16, 2015 Share #5 Posted May 16, 2015 Well, let's add this more recent and related article, too…. http://www.imx.nl/photo/leica/camera/styled-44/ I particularly enjoyed the part where he concludes that the M8.2 actually has the upper hand in performance compared to the M9, contrary to popular belief. The M8.2…underrated gem in the series…not up to the M in many respects, but a wonderfully capable tool, as Puts notes here and elsewhere. Lenshacker Posted May 16, 2015 Share #6 Posted May 16, 2015 I would like to see him do a review of the M8 shooting in 14-bit mode. He seems to use the M8 as a baseline. The 0.5mm IR absorbing filter used on the M8 gives it an advantage. The KAF-10500 sensor has ~3dB higher Dynamic range than the M9 sensor, and is closer to the M240. DNG-8 crippled it, 14-bit makes it whole again. http://www.imx.nl/photo/leica/camera/styled-11/ Erwin also compares the M8.2 with the M240 above. "The thin filter of the M8 might be the cause of this phenomenon. It is also a proof that the performance of the M is often overhyped when compared to the original M8.
