M4 shutter problems

Hi all,

New to film Leica, picked up a craigslist M4 cheap, but it has shutter problems. With the camera bottom removed and the back of the camera lifted up, when I fully cock the shutter I can look from the back of the camera through the lens, no shutter curtain blocking light. Not a good sign. When I press the shutter release button there is a slight tick noise, but no shutter movement, when I release the shutter button the 2nd curtain closes. So I seem to be missing my first curtain, probably jammed. This happens at all shutter speeds. 

Any thoughts or experience with this particular issue?

Looking for a recommendation for a place for this kind of repair and a CLA.

Yes definately a CLA needed, probably a repair of the shutter as well. 

Look for Will van Manen at Kamera Service in the Netherlands if you live in Europe. Maybe better to ask other people for other parts of the world.

Of course you could still ship to the Netherlands from all over the world.

This is why I always advise people new to Leica to buy their first camera from a dealer who provides a warranty. At least you say you got it cheap, but it needs to be £3-400 cheap as that's the typical cost of a full CLA, but once done it should be good for another 50 years.

I'm in western Massachusetts, so Don Goldberg, Youxin Ye or Sherry Krauter would be good. I've sent each an email to ask about repair cost and turn around time.
