Is the D-Lux 2 being replaced?

I understand that they sold out of the complete production run ahead of time - it does create an opportunity for a truely portable, high quality pocket digital camera, though....funny - I seem to have said that somewhere before...!!

In Belgium the DL2 is sold out. There is a (small) chance you can find one at a local Leica dealer. If not in your own country look on internet shops in other countries. They still may have some to sell.

I have no idea what Leica will do with a replacement. Personally I think you have to watch new Panasonic camera launches and certainly follow press releases of Leica when we are moving more and more to the Photokina in Cologne later this year.

Just to be clear, Leica never made any Digilux 2s, or D-Lux 2 or indeed C-Lux 1. They were/are all made by Panasonic. It's interesting that if you look at the digital cameras section on the web-site, only 2 out of the 4 cameras listed are generally available. The Digilux 2 and D-L:ix 2 had a fixed production run and seem to be basically sold out with maybe just a few available. The problem for Leica is that these cameras are built in batches by a huge production "machine" and the plant then moves onto new products so that they have to predict how many they are going to sell from the outset. They can't go back and have some more made.

I suppose it's better that they build less than demand so that we don't see D2's "remaindered" for $199 at Wal-Mart.

As for future camera, there is a huge gap between the DMR/M8 and C-Lux 1 which has to be filled by at least 2 new cameras. Something based around the L1 is the obvious contender for the mid-range but there is then space for a D-Lux 2 replacement and maybe one other. What Leica do not need though is the equivalent of 30 or so Nikon P&S cameras available here in the UK.

I think, the Digilux has to make place for the Leica equivalent of the 4/3- Panasonic L1.

The Samsung is not interesting for me. No optical viewfinder and no wideangle-capabilities. Varioplan normally at Schneider-Kreuznach is the name for second quality lenses ( behind the Variogon-line). Nice designed, but that´s all.

I find the new Samsungs interesting as well. Nice design. A version with a wide-angle would be a big plus in my opinion.

I will be surprised if Leica doesn't announce a replacement for the D-Lux 2 at Photokina.

I also think it is time for an innovative new pocket camera, made by Panasonic but with some input from Leica.

R.

How about a digital "O" Series, Null Series or UR Series......the ultimate retro digital camera, Oskar's camera..

I can't speak for Michiel, and I haven't heard anything specific. This is just keyboard speculation.

However, Leica has been working with Kodak's sensor developers on other projects. We know the D-lux 2 is no more. We know that Leica has been roundly criticized for noisy CCDs. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Leica/Kodak effort replace the D-lux 2.
