Summicron 75mm versus CV 75mm-Sean Reid's new review

Hmmm. I was not aware of Erwin's 2005 article on the Summicron 75/2.0 and the CV 75/2.5, which helps me understand his claim that he had already said all that (in his view) needed to be said on the subject. He seems to dismiss the Heliar in part because he feels it is a copy of a much older Leica design, and cannot pull out "all the latest tricks of optics and glass materials." I wonder how much of the difference between his and Sean's actual observations are the result of looking in the corners of the wider full frame (beyond the maximum radius of 15 mm that the M8 uses), and checking the optical bench predictions against the results of film grains, not 7 micron pixels.

Hi Scott,

Erwin, you say, dismisses the 75 Heliar and yet many people on this forum who have tried this lens after reading my review seem to be quite impressed with it. In fact, many of the comments are, I believe, on this very thread. Hmmm...wonder why that is?

Cheers,

Sean

Scott,

Quite - I use a Zenitar 16mm fish-eye on an Elephoto M42 to Leica M adapter. I originally bought the lens with a Contax SLR adapter for use on my Contax RX. It was a pretty evil lens with horrendous vignetting, low contrast, poor definition and CA in the corners. I rarely used it. With the reduced image size of the M8, it is surprisingly acceptable.

It is all very well having the esoteric debate between these two lenses. Please bear in mind a couple of things from an amateur photographer who is retired living on a modest income:

* I can buy a CV 75mm today in the UK (and have done so based on the Reid review, of course I am well pleased with the results), Summicron 75mm's are scarcer than hens teeth at the moment so I don't have the luxury of a comparison with my style of photography.

* There is one heck of a price difference.

I would love to be able to see the two side by side with my photography, see above why it won't happen. If I win the lottery I can buy the Summicron in a couple of years time when they are about and sell my CV on EBay. In the mean time I have a 75mm lens to use.

Well, I enjoy reading Sean's reviews, but isn't "brand" factor and quality associated with it what keep Leica on top of all others and the reason why many of us buy Leica as opposed to something else in the first place? M body construction aside, aren't the most reputable and probably unbeatable aspects of Leica are the superb Leica lenses???

Frankly, I don't think we will see another 75 mm/1.4. (In fact, I wonder if we will see another 1.4!) I would not be surprised however if Leica brought out a 75 mm Elmarit.

Prophetic words that have come true. ;)

Well it draws beautifully and for my use with it , it's perfect.

ROTFLMAO. Well it's true but I wound up buying the 75 cron instead. LOL

I did the 75mm comparisons between all the Leica's but I did not have the CV 75mm for my tests , glad to see it is good . Have to read the article.

Got the 75 for my RD-1 based on Sean's review and then a 75 'Lux for the M8 as I wanted that extra speed.

While talking about CV lenses, Why can't CV bring out a 2.5 90mm Lanthar? Their current 90 is just too slow for my taste.

My guess is because there is not enough demand and lots of excellent 90/2.8 Elmarit-M's available at low prices and due to their focal length, not used a lot. I paid €450 for a minter.

What test? I cant find the test Sorry. Best regards Peter

It is is http://www.reidreviews.com (a suscription site but IMHO excellent value for money). It is fairly far down the list between the review for the Voigtlander 40/1.4 and Ultra wide RF lenses. There is a review of the 75 Summarit further up.

I just had the grandest time reading through this thread :) I own a CV 75 heliar, and was about to sell it (in fact, it's still listed in some forums). I used it on the RD-1, and found it too long. Now, I am waiting for my M8 to arrive (thanks to a rich uncle yay!) and have decided against selling my 75 heliar.

I am also intrigued by Reid Reviews. Though I have come across some of his articles via Luminous Landscape, I never thought about subscribing because the price of admission is a bit steep for me (I work as a writer in a third world country, to give you an idea of my financial capabilities :D). One might argue that I have spent fairly significant amounts on cameras and lenses, but then most have come from relatives who funded those for me (I am also a freelance photographer, who enjoy(ed?) a modicum of success - reputation wise, not financially - as a photographer. Hence, the support from my family :) ) But I digress, as I said, I am intrigued by Reid Reviews, and will save up to subscribe in a couple of months. All based on reader's experiences, and glowing praises found here :)

The thirty odd dollars a year is the best money l've ever spent.

"if this CV <insert instead of "CV" Reid Reviews here> was more expensive, people would take it more seriously."

Sean, you should raise your prices! :D

Thanks again for your work--it's serious enough. :)

Cheeky,

Will

Thanks Wilson.
