Joshua Lowe Posted April 14, 2015 Share #41 Posted April 14, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I always shoot DNG+JPG. It's very rare that I am happier with the in-camera JPG than I am with the result of post-processing the DNG in LR.
Advertisement Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Hi Joshua Lowe, Take a look here Let's talk WB!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
IkarusJohn Posted April 14, 2015 Share #42 Posted April 14, 2015 Leica obviously assumes everyone shoots RAW with their M's and then resets in whatever RAW developer they use. JPEG's are obviously a long way down Leica's priority list and, given that they regard the M's are professional cameras, that might be a reasonable stance to take. Other makers give more priority to getting WB correct and providing good out-of-camera JPEG's. Would it be unreasonable to expect both good RAW and good JPEG images, with reasonably accurate WB? The JPEG's out of my Olympus EP-5, along with their WB is so good, I rarely bother with RAW from this camera. Other than quick posts for things like eBay, I never use anything other than RAW with my digital M's. Wilson I hated the Auto WB on my M9, and didn't like the Jpegs much either. I always carried a white balance card and set white balance at the start of most sessions. If I didn't have it with me, I'd use the palm of my hand. This was basically to get the best starting point with my raw files. When I got the M Edition 60, I was disappointed to find that it had an AutoWB setting only. I asked Leica if there was any way this could be set at (say) 5500 Kelvin for every shot. They said no, and they're not planning any firmware updates (which is not as unreasonable as it sounds). What i have found is that I can rarely improve on the Auto WB setting in LightRoom. Perhaps those with better post processing skills than me can improve on it, but I can't. I'm very impressed (and I can understand why some are happy with the Jpegs out of the M(240) - not for me, but I'm sure they're very good by comparison to the M9 output). lct Posted April 15, 2015 Share #43 Posted April 15, 2015 [...] It's very rare that I am happier with the in-camera JPG than I am with the result of post-processing the DNG [...] Never happened to me. The only camera which gave me more or less acceptable OOC jpegs was my old 5D1 in good light.
