When I moved from Canon to Leica, I had to raise my renters policy limit. It is better to check. And, I live in San Francisco neighborhood too. First rule is never to leave anything of value, however minor, visible in the parked car. Other than that, I do agree that inequality do plays some part. John Z. Goriup Posted March 19, 2015 Share #42 Posted March 19, 2015 Maybe it's just my perecption ( and I could be way off in my estimation of this ), but I personally envision the avarage Leica M owner / aficionado as an older person, in many cases retired, financially comfortable, educated, well-traveled and widely experienced, yet, perhaps paradoxically, because of distaste and a certain disdain for some aspects of modern ways and mores and with a generous quantity of naiveté in the true, squalid situations of the "under-served" under-class thrown in, relatively unaware of the harsh realities of current everyday life. I freely admit that describes my personal situation / profile quite accurately and comprehensively. Had lunch with a close, respected friend who chairs a wealthy San Francisco's suburb's Law Enforcement Commission the other day and had my eyes opened and some strongly entrenched and very wrong-headed assumptions turned around completely. Some of what we discussed: The entire state California is currently suffering a significant increase in the rate of crime, specifically, home robberies, car thefts, stealing every thing loose in parked cars, driving vehicles through walls & locked doors and even showroom windows with rented trucks for the purpose of lightning raids involving multiple person who empty the selected establishment of anything valuable and easily convertible into quick cash. The goal in virtually most of these cases seems to be desperate and increasingly imaginative ways to obtain the maximum of money for drugs. Most of these crimes are committed in prosperous and up-scale communities by repeat offenders, frequently from communities quite a ways from where the crimes are/were committed. The cause ? Most police chiefs, mayors and so-called experts who claim to know all about these things blame Propostion #47. Prop #47 ???. Yes, it's been long enough now since the implementation of this wretched piece of misguided legislation, to dedect a clear corollary between the implementation of Prop. #47, wherein the US Supreme Court ordered the State of California to reduce its prison population by a certain percentage and by a stipulated deadline, due to overcrwding in the state prison system, and the dramatic increase in the type of crimes described above. In its decision the court permitted the state and the Governor to present a plan for complying with the Supreme Court's decision by a hard & fast deadline. In the end, the state's choice was to release 10s of thousands of criminal who were closest to completing their terms of servitude to the state because the prospects for permits and obtaining the funds necessary for more prison facilities to relieve the over-crowding appeared to be nil, and to put to a popular vote changes to existing laws reducing property crimes to misdemeanors for which judges cannot impose prison sentences, i.e. Prop.#47. For decades prison over-crowding in Calif. has been a fact of life, and for years, the political gridlock in the process of getting the planning and permitting of more penal institutions approved has existed and completely paralyzed the creation of additional facilities to house the burgeoning population of law-breakers………..so, we find ourselves in the absurd situation where all of our state prisons are chock-full, the inmates are fit, tanned and well-rested, fed three times a day, enjoy better healthcare than most and serving reduced terms for the sake of making room for the absolute worst of the incoming hordes of new as well as highly experienced miscreants. In the meantime, not one new prison is even in the earliest stages of planning, let alone constructions, police everywhere is hand-cuffed by budget shortfalls, constraints are placed on their actions, and in the case of judges their freedom to sentence criminals to deserved, traditional and proportional punishment / prison sentences has been sharply curtailed. Many of the cases of breaking & entering, thefts, muggings, etc. are now dealt with with scarcely more severly than a common non-injury traffic-ticket. In view of this reality and the prevailing political mindset in the most populous, wealthiest yet closest-to-official bankruptcy, and trend-setting state in the U.S is it any wonder that we're robbing & battering each other with increasing frequency and fervor, because, as the criminals probably figure - "What have we got to loose". It's not just your Leica(s) that are at risk. The contents of your home, your transportation, personal property, wallets, money clips, phones, personal electronics, attache cases, purses etc. are all easy pickings for an ever smarter, more aware and observant sub-culture of "professional" thieves, thugs and felons. My personal feelings on the matter are that eventually we will do as we've done so many times before…………we will grossly overreact. The protests and artificial outrage of the Left will make reasonable, thoughtful debate impossible, the stench will be great, but in the end the pendulum will hopefully swing from an attitude of today's extreme tolerance and permissiveness to defining and punishing criminal behavior more realistically and demanding personal accountability for choices and actions. I hope I'm around to see it. JZG

DMJ Posted March 19, 2015 Share #49 Posted March 19, 2015 Things were more rational when we Europeans settled our differences by killing each other? Isn't this done on a daily (every few seconds according to statistics) basis currently in North America & even quicker in parts of Central America. Don't need a war to whittle away the population. IkarusJohn Posted March 20, 2015 Share #50 Posted March 20, 2015 I've got a suggestion. Increase the penalties for violent crime (just execute them immediately on being found guilty); increase the prison terms for property crimes, and put the overflow into retired ships and moor them in a harbour somewhere; and when that gets too crowded, ship them off to another country ... Oh, hang on. That's been done before? I'll get me coat ...

Judge Dredd Interestingly the comic was authored by a leftie liberal who wanted to show the horror of, what he defined, as a fascist like Dredd. He was horrified when Dredd became a cult hero with people expressing the wish for his type of judge/policemen in society
profus Posted March 20, 2015 Share #52 Posted March 20, 2015 Things were more rational when we Europeans settled our differences by killing each other? Of course not, but these are things from the past... I was more talking about domestic affairs at the present time. Or you want us to talk about foreign policies? In that case we should probably mention which country has been constantly in war for the last >60 years. But we'd better not talk politics here
