2wk Posted February 24, 2015 Share #41 Â Posted February 24, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Â Looks nice but I would rather brass my own. Â At least it doesn't have a KRAVITZ sig scrawled across the top or something.
Advertisement Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Hi 2wk, Take a look here Lenny Kravitz Edition - cool, pretentious, or hoax?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Joshua Lowe Posted February 24, 2015 Share #42 Â Posted February 24, 2015 The "pre-brassing" is super pretentious and it puts me off, just a little bit. Â I do like the texture of the wrap, though.

Paulus Posted February 24, 2015 Share #46  Posted February 24, 2015 Okay, probably not a hoax, as we know he uses a Leica M and a special edition from him has been rumoured. But it's not on Leicarumors yet, and not on the Leica website yet, that I can see...  So, presuming this image is real, what do you think? I personally love the idea of brassed up old black cameras and lenses... but this isn't. It's brand new. Does that make it too affected in style - too pretentious, too "poseur"?    Image pulled from leading Hong Kong dealer, Fotopia    LEICA M-P CORRESPONDENT // Leica M // Fotografie - Leica Camera AG  This is on the website of Leica but does anyone know the price already>

Rick Posted February 25, 2015 Share #51 Â Posted February 25, 2015 I have to say, I'm changing my mind... I would love to have this camera. Â Hear me out? I didn't say I'd like to buy this camera. I just mean, it would be fun to hold and look at like a classic piece of mechanical excellence. I bet from an esthetic or artful view, it is just beautiful to hold and look at. It is art, on some level. Â This camera, like the runway model, says; Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. Â Rick
Exodies Posted February 25, 2015 Share #52 Â Posted February 25, 2015 Are all the copies identical? I mean, was the black paint hand applied to a specific pattern? Â If they used the same paint that they use to colour the word "Info" (on the right of the screen) for the whole camera then they could hit two birds with one stone - the desire for a shiny new camera and the wish (fulfilled after only one month) for a well worn one... Why should I wear a jeans or a camera which has a beaten up look? I like to make my own screatches on my own gear. Nobody els has to do that. Every sratch is a reminder of a story like a scar on your body . Who is telling what story if you have this L.K. camera?
wattsy Posted February 25, 2015 Share #54  Posted February 25, 2015 Personally I think this new edition is a misstep by Leica. It is of course true that it is probably easy revenue for Leica (though it is worth pointing out that, contrary to popular opinion, not all special editions of the digital cameras sell out – e.g. M60) and this revenue helps secure the future of the company, blah blah. It is also clear that many Leica purchases are made based on aesthetic considerations (I'm personally guilty of having a fondness for a black paint film Leica that is in no way logical) and there ought to be no harm in appealing to this aspect of the Leica product.  However, the artifice of this particular edition crosses a line for me (as it does when guitar manufacturers or jeans manufacturers sell pre-worn products). It's one thing to acknowledge the inherent lack of durability of the black paint finish and how the purchaser can leave their own mark on a camera (a canny line that Leica have promoted since they launched the MP over ten years ago) it is quite another IMO to pre-brass a camera for the customer. Not only does that miss the point of the attractiveness of the paint finish (that the owner can leave their own traces of use) quite spectacularly it also blatantly highlights the perceived vanity and gullibility of the modern Leica customer. In doing this, Leica are insulting their own customers and whilst I think this edition will pass by without too much ridicule and comment, it does have the whiff of a "Ratner" moment about it. Â But put yourself in the shoes of the prospective purchaser of this camera. He (it's unlikely to be a she) has cash to spare on a vanity item, he wants a Leica so that he can appear 'arty' to his friends. He likes the look of a well used item to make himself appear credible - "yes, I'm always using this camera, I'm a serious photographer" - but actually hardly ever uses a camera and would never get to wear through to the brass in the lifetime of a regular edition. Â He can now buy a ready made 'used' new camera that makes it look like he's been carrying the thing about for years, and must therefore be a very great photographer. Instant credibility wherever he carries it (unless he bumps into another Leica user!).

Instant credibility wherever he carries it (unless he bumps into another Leica user!). Â That's what the person might think. But in my opinion the brassing looks well done. Fake done. No scratches on the LCD? No other scratches and dings anywhere? A Summilux ASPH in the old design (but with the "ASPH" markings on the lens)? A camera that has not been on the market for 6 months (M-P branding on the hot-shoe) yet looks completely worn out, in a pretty and perfect way? Snakeskin leatherette without any dings, scratches, scuffs or markings at all? Â It's gonna be easy to spot the posers wearing this kit

Exodies Posted February 25, 2015 Share #58 Â Posted February 25, 2015 In one of Flan O'Brien's columns (republished in "The Best of Myles" by Myles na gCopaleen) he describes a service for busy people where their books are thumbed, dog eared and annotated to give the impression that the customer is well read. This was before the treatment was available for jeans or cameras; Brian may have invented the genre.
sdk Posted February 25, 2015 Share #59 Â Posted February 25, 2015 Personally I think it's a ridiculous trust-fund-hipster-doofus edition. I wish that Leica would work on making a camera that's better on the inside, rather than distress-finishing a few cameras for posers and collectors. Â I'd love to upgrade my M9-P to a Leica M with 36-50MP sensor, dual SD cards, and scrollable live view for tripod work, but Leica isn't making such a camera yet. I hope their R&D guys are hard at work. That might compensate for the idiots pushing their luxury marketing practices. I want my next Leica to be a tool not a jewel. jaapv Posted February 25, 2015 Share #60 Â Posted February 25, 2015 Who do you think pays the salary of the R&D guys - at least in part? Right: those idiots, posers and collectors. How much R&D do you think went into this camera selling @ 24.500 $$$ a burp? Right again - nothing.
