CCD Monochrom DSLR?

Given the great success of the Leica Monochrom, I wonder why other leading camera manufacturers haven't jumped at the opportunity to create a Monocrom DSLR with a CCD sensor? No, it would not be for mass consumption, but given the high price tag they could charge, and still be cheaper than Leica, it could be a profitable endeavor. Any thoughts?

Mike Johnston at TOP has written for years…long before the MM... about his desire for a monochrome only b/w camera at a reasonable price point. Speaking to this issue, Ctein (one of his contributors) mentioned that b/w has been about 1% of the photo market for decades. A strictly monochrome camera would be a niche within a niche for the big players. And I'd add that one reason those players got big is that their price points are not typically Leica-like. [Leave it to Leica to charge more for less.]

It might be more likely for a company like Fuji, or maybe Olympus, to take a chance on a such a small market, with a smaller sensor camera, but I wouldn't count on it.

CCD? Well, that's another issue…more common in medium format.

I for one would welcome a compact DSLR with a CCD sensor comparable to the MM, and a line of AF lenses. Those of us who prefer the CCD know why we do.

If only I could custom order the camera of my dreams? It could have been a Leica R Monochrom with a new line of AF lenses. Alas, the camera of my dreams, it really doesn't exist.

The market would probably be far too small to be of interest to DSLR vendors. In any case they would use a CMOS, not a CCD sensor. (As would Leica if they did design a monochrome M now, 3 years after the original M Monochrom.)

I wonder why you think that anyone should intend to do a stupid thing like that. Given today's technology, CCD sensors are inferior to CMOS sensors in all aspects—so no camera maker who is in his right mind would consider to develop a new digital camera with a CCD sensor, be it monochrome or colour.
