Thats amazing sharpness on the eyelashes and very well effected focussing skill Lexffm. I get it that you wanted to show what this amazing lens can achieve and yes sometimes unbelievable. What about the other elements of your portrait such as mid tone contrast (the face colour is flat) and cropping extra space at the top? I dont mean to criticise your photo, it's just that you seem to have forgotten a few things in your excitement.

Olaf, I'm not quite comfortable with the lighting of this otherwise splendid portrait. The position and brightness of the strobe to your left produces two effects which I think could be corrected. One: the drop shadow of the ear is very prominent and its shape is difficult to understand. You already fixed the problem of the transparently lit ear, but I don't think you're there, yet. Two: the right side of the neck up to over the right ear is close to blown out. The shirt has more detail than the skin of the neck, which I find unfortunate. That the lower part of the left hand is in deep shadow I can live with, even if I think it would look better if it was not all that dark. 2

Portrait of my colleague M11-P with NOCTILUX 1:1,25 /75; ISO 64, f3.4, 1/360 Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Lex, Thank you for showing this portrait here, and thanks to your colleague who kindly lent you his face and his time. I can understand that you enjoy the narrow depth of field of your lens (don't we all?) and your capability of accurately focusing the lens (no mean feat). However, I think that this choice of expression (the narrow depth of field) is a bit unfortunate for this image. The model's right eye and a narrow strip of skin on his left side is in focus, as well as part of his neck and then part of his shirt on the left shoulder. His left eye, eyebrow, nose and above all his mouth are blurred. In my mind these are all artefacts which detract the viewer from seeing your model's face as a complete whole. What we see is the narrow slice of reality depicted by the lens when we should concentrate on the face and expression of your colleague. That the right eye is in focus rather than the left one which is closer to the camera violates one of the rules many here insist on, but that's merely a convention which you may or may not follow. It does not actually make a big difference. In my opinion, the composition could also gain from a bit more room to the right and the bottom of the image.

Olaf_ZG Posted March 6, 2024 Share #4272 Posted March 6, 2024 @popreally appreciate your feedback. As for this session, images have been taken, I can only try to fix it in post, and for new sessions I will place my lights and their ratios better.
LocalHero1953 Posted March 6, 2024 Share #4273 Posted March 6, 2024 I really appreciate such constructive feedback on portraits as well. It's nice to hear 'nice shot', but even better to hear: 'this is an issue with your portrait for me - why don't you try.....'

I should have given just a slice more depth (not wide open) I guess to get a smoother rendition.
