Talus Posted May 12, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I found this 50mm on ebay and I noticed from the pictures that the front of the lens is different than other 50mms I've seen. The ring that says "Leica Summicron-M 1:2/50" and has the numbers is located parallel to the mounting plate, it's flat. With every other 50mm lens that I have seen the engravings are on a ring that appears to be slanted inwards towards the front element. Any idea why this one is different? Is it even a real Leica or is it a knockoff? eBay: LEICA SUMMICRON-M 50MM F2 (item 110125438771 end time May-14-07 13:47:44 PDT)
Advertisement Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Hi Talus, Take a look here 50mm F/2 Summicron on eBay. Why is it different?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
telewatt Posted May 12, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 12, 2007 .. ..I can't see nothing wrong.?..this is a 4th type from 1991... regards, Jan
Talus Posted May 12, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 12, 2007 I'm not familiar with the changes in the generations of lenses. It looked different from the others that I've seen. Thanks Jan.
gravastar Posted May 12, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 12, 2007 My tabbed Summicron is similar to the one on eBay and has a flat front ring. If you want to use it on the M8 and have the lens coded then I'm not sure coding is possible. The screw diametrically opposite the red locator bump is where the coding cut outs have to go. I took this lens and a much earlier non tabbed one to Leica UK to see if they could be coded. The earlier one definately not, the bayonet mount is thicker and there's no coded replacement. The tabbed one they weren't so sure about and I have to send it to Solms to find out. It's a nice lens - I find the tab very useful. The complete lens head can be unscrewed for cleaning etc. Be aware that the degree of rotation needed to focus from infinity to 0.7m is about 100 deg. on the tabbed and 190 deg. on the untabbed version, so in use they "feel" very different. As a matter of interest I believe all tabbed lenses - old and new - focus at 3.5 feet when the tab is at the bottom of the lens. A useful feature for street work. Bob. Talus Posted May 12, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted May 12, 2007 The lens is for an M6 TTL, so I don't think I'll have to worry about having it coded. When you're talking about "tabbed" you're referring to the nub on the focus ring?

Talus Posted May 13, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted May 13, 2007 Thanks lct! I was going to ask if anyone knew where I could find a web database that had the listings of the generations. This is a great help. -Greg
lct Posted May 13, 2007 Share #13 Posted May 13, 2007 You're welcome Greg. I've just got the 4th and 5th (Canadian) versions personally but i like much the latter for its small size, focus tab, reasonable sharpness and smooth bokeh. Here with pre-asph and asph Summilux 50. Just cute isn't it?

There is no optical difference, just a difference in the mounts. It is a fine performer and very compact. Robert

robsteve Posted May 14, 2007 Share #17 Posted May 14, 2007 I just came across this while googling. I don't know how accurate it is but I found it helpful: Leica 50mm Summicron Lens Gregory: The descriptions on that link look accurate. LCT's post on versions seemed to be counting each different mount style as a new version. Normally, there are only considered four optical versions of the 50mm Summicron. tobey bilek Posted May 15, 2007 Share #19 Posted May 15, 2007 Original issue of the current optical formula with focusing tab. Later versions have no tab and built in extendable hood. It is neither special or overpriced.
Talus Posted May 15, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted May 15, 2007 That auction is over. I'm still looking for a newer 50mm Summicron though. Thanks for the replies. BTW, my M6 TTL came today!!!
