R4 meter won't switch off!

Hi

Have just joined the forum, so apologies if this topic has been covered already!

I recently bought my first Leica, an R4, a wonderful piece of kit!

I have only one issue, in that I have noticed that the metering lights don't always switch off after I have used the camera. I am not sure if there is an auto shut off after a certain length of time?

I am able to get the lights to extinguish if I operate the mode switch back and forth - this often does the trick, but not always.

Perhaps there is a build up of dirt in the contacts somewhere?

Should I leave well alone, and just carry spare batteries, perhaps!

Any advice gratefully received!

Regards

Lee.

Welcome to the forum. You've come to a fun and informative hangout.

I have an R4, and your problem doesnt sound right to me.

Hopefully someone will have experience with this, and be able to offer specific guidance. Meantime, I'd go with your 2 ideas-- fiddle with it, and keep spare batteries. Who knows, maybe your switch fiddling will "clean" the contacts via abrasion.

I agree with your thiughts in using the R4. It's a beautiful feeling camera in the hand, a joy to use it.

Hi Brenton

Thanks for the response.

I think I may have figured out the problem - the mode switch is 'sticking' - I think it's supposed to spring back out after you have pressed it in. Just pulling on it with a fingernail seems to solve the problem.

Probably a lack of use has caused this - the camera looks like new considering it is over 30 years old!

Just a further question guys, I have my eye on a "Motor Winder R", which seems to fit more than one model. Will this fit my R4?

Thanks.

Hi Lee,

Im headed outta town for the weekend, but if you don't have an answer, I'll try it on Monday. I have an R4, my girlfriend an R5... And a power winder came with one of them. The R 5 I think.

Glad you solved the meter - off problem.

Such a nice camera to handle and use.
