fotografr Posted December 24, 2014 Share #1 Posted December 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received my VL(114) and noticed right away that while the camera is turned on there is a constant soft churning sound eminating from it. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with mine? Thanks,
Advertisement Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Hi fotografr, Take a look here VL(114) Noise Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
fotografr Posted December 24, 2014 Author Share #2 Posted December 24, 2014 I should have pointed out that this is not a loud noise. I have to put the camera close to my ear in order to hear it.
Jon Schick Posted December 24, 2014 Share #3 Posted December 24, 2014 Almost certainly the image stabilisation. Does the camera still make the same noise if you switch the stabilisation off? Cheers, Jon
fotografr Posted December 25, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted December 25, 2014 Almost certainly the image stabilisation. Does the camera still make the same noise if you switch the stabilisation off? Cheers, Jon That was my first thought, too, because it sounds similar to the noise my Canon 70-200 f2.8 made when I switched the IS on. My VL(114), however, makes the noise with the IS both on and off.
Northwest Wanderer Posted December 25, 2014 Share #5 Posted December 25, 2014 Brent, I did some checking with my V-Lux 114 to see if my camera made the sound you mentioned. With my menu setup I don't have a noise (sound) coming from the camera. I tried to find a setting that might produce the sound you mentioned and found a likely culprit. In the CUSTOM menu, toggle down to ZOOM RESUME. If you set it to OFF, the noise should stop. With ZOOM RESUME set to ON there is a slight motor noise. I don't use this setting set to ON as it's of no benefit to me. I hope this solves the problem.

Still getting the slight noise. Thank you for trying to figure this out.
Northwest Wanderer Posted December 25, 2014 Share #7 Posted December 25, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Brent, Sorry my suggestion didn't help. I have to think it's in one of the settings. Maybe set to manual and see if the problem goes away. Then rework your settings that pertain to focus. fotografr Posted December 25, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted December 25, 2014 I've now gone through every setting on the camera and done two resets. Nothing I do eliminates the noise. I'm a little uncertain about whether to send it back because everything is working properly. On the other hand, if it is a sign of a more serious issue, I'd hate to have to send it in for repair and go a long period waiting for a fix or replacement. If I send it back now, I should be able to get an immediate replacement.
Northwest Wanderer Posted December 25, 2014 Share #9 Posted December 25, 2014 Brent, I was going to suggest doing a reset. Seeing you have all ready done that without success I guess you've tried everything. I would return it for a replacement while there is time to do so. Sorry to see you've had bad luck. Don't worry about it Brent, it's perfectly normal, you can google "Panasonic FZ1000 noise" and you will get ton of results and video test. FZ1000 is the same camera with V-lux. Northwest Wanderer Posted December 26, 2014 Share #11 Posted December 26, 2014 Brent, Not to discount Sonny's comment but I've not had this problem with my VL 114.
fotografr Posted December 26, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted December 26, 2014 As far as I can tell from reading numerous comments about the Panasonic FZ1000, the noise seems to come from the 5-axis sensor stabilization system. Some cameras seem to make more noise than others but the consensus is that it isn't an issue that people need to be concerned about. Bill, when your camera is turned on and you hold it right up to your ear, do you hear anything at all or is it totally silent? I checked my DL109 and there is a similar, but very faint, noise. Brent, Good news, if I put my ear up against the lens I do hear a very faint noise. If that's what you hear I would say you're camera is fine. I'd not noticed it before because it's so faint. stuny Posted December 26, 2014 Share #14 Posted December 26, 2014 Barbara surprised me with a new VL 114. Same noise. Glad to hear it's not an issue.
just4fun Posted December 26, 2014 Share #15 Posted December 26, 2014 The noise will be a problem when shooting Video and most likely in quiet environments... external Mic will help solve the problem. This video should give you an idea how the noise will affect the Video: Let's hope that Pan-Leica somehow will address this issue in the future updates. fotografr Posted December 26, 2014 Author Share #16 Posted December 26, 2014 Let's hope that Pan-Leica somehow will address this issue in the future updates. I'll second that. Stuart--I think you're going to like the camera a lot. The image quality is very good. Bill--Thanks for checking again. I imagine there are slight differences is the noise level from one camera to another. Also probably in our hearing.
