yeahyoung Posted November 19, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Saw this ad posted by a reputed local dealer at Toronto. Other than sharing it with you guys, I am also curious about 1) does the ELC status increase the value/rarity of the item, and 2) is the price fair for a brand new M3 like this, even without the ELC status? Any information will be much appreciated. Leica M3 1140927 ELC brand new in box | cameras, camcorders | Markham / York Region | Kijiji
Advertisement Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Hi yeahyoung, Take a look here Brand New Leica M3 "Elnest Leitz Canada". I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted November 19, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 19, 2014 I don't follow prices for 'historical' or collectible M bodies but my gut feeling is that the price, around the same as new retail price of an MP, is not unreasonable for a genuine new-in-box M3. If you are planning on using it, you might want to factor in the cost of a CLA, despite what the seller claims re: shutter speeds, etc. A nice find, if genuine. luigi bertolotti Posted November 19, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 19, 2014 The Canadian M3s (which do bear the std. Wetzlar engraving) are usually valued some more than normal items... but not so much (just to say... something from +10% to + 25%) : the asked price is imho someway in the high side, but looks to be in very fine conditions, and the whole kit (warranty, papers...) is surely an addon value, so as its belonging to the last batch from Ontario factory. All in all... if one likes to have a fine M3 with "something that makes it uncommon", avoiding the supercostly rarities like black, 700.0xx etc... this can be a very satisfactory item to have at a respectable but no fraudolent cost. zlatkob Posted November 19, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 19, 2014 Wow, this camera was made in 1966 and has apparently been unused for 48 years.
gyoung Posted November 19, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 19, 2014 Mine was one of the last batch 1158... Bought in Canada in '68 and I have box, instructions and canadian guarantee card, the difference is of course that mine has been a constant companion for over 40 years and has has hundreds of rolls of film through it, a much better fate IMHO. otto.f Posted November 19, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 19, 2014 Just like with cars, unused is not good. If you start using it for the first time in 40 years with dried up oil, it may cause damages. I think I'd be better off with a new MP 0.85, which I saw in the Buy&Sell here lately, because of the flare-resistant finder. Canadian as a fetish, I really doubt it
gyoung Posted November 19, 2014 Share #7 Posted November 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) The M3 has a flare resistant finder.... In fact so have the M2 and the M4... Cost cutting later brought in the flareing r/f patch, I'm not sure when but my M6ttl has this 'feature'. IMHO its an overrrated problem, only occasionally evident and overcome by moving your eye slightly. Gerry

Canadian as a fetish, I really doubt it I agree that if one targets this camera for reallu USING (I mean using regularly in any conditions, not the way one uses , six times or so an year, his precious Ferrari of the '50s... ) , is not a smart choice : the "M3 experience" can be enjoyed for much less. pico Posted November 20, 2014 Share #10 Posted November 20, 2014 If you are looking for a rationalization, then $4999 in 2014 would have been about $680 in 1966.
