lanetomlane Posted November 17, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 17, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Let me explain. I've had a Monochrom for nearly a year and have been extremely frustrated with it in that I have been unable to activate the exposure lock (shutter pressed half way) which makes it impossible to use anything but manual to take an exposure reading and then compose. At various meetings numerous people have tried the camera and all agreed that it wasn't right. I've always resisted returning it to the mothership as I haven't wanted to be without it. However, at the Bristol meeting on Saturday I'd had enough of it and was determined to return it to Germany today (Monday). Whilst in the pub Saturday afternoon, Robert suggested trying it without the softie and low and behold it worked as it should. (I've always used softies and naturally screwed one into the Monochrom shutter as soon as I got it.) If anyone else experiences the same problem and uses softies with any of the M's, it may be worth trying it without the softie. Thanks again Robert, you've saved me the postage and weeks of waiting. Cheers, Tom

gravastar Posted November 17, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 17, 2014 Yes, I had exactly the same problem with the M240. With the softie I found I could never stop at the halfway point. Take out the soft release and exposure lock works as intended. Bob.

wattsy Posted November 17, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 17, 2014 Might not be relevant but the shutter release of the Monochrom and M240 reportedly has a slightly different thread in the shutter release compared with previous M cameras.

Yes, you're correct as the softies I had with the M8's kept coming unscrewed in the M and Monochrom and I had to order two new ones from Germany .... can't remember exactly where I bought them. Cheers, Tom I tried several different softie's with my M-E and just couldn't get along with them as I had the same issue as you. Couldn't stop the release at the meter lock position. pico Posted November 17, 2014 Share #8 Posted November 17, 2014 Tom Abrahamsson is aware of the different cable release dimensions and makes a version that works properly. He writes of it here: RapidSofties .

It's themsame thread. The chrome plating hosed things up.
pico Posted November 17, 2014 Share #10 Posted November 17, 2014 It's themsame thread. The chrome plating hosed things up. Do you think that Tom Abrahamsson is wrong? I don't. If a part does not work because of the chrome plate, then it is just plain wrong. .
DigitalHeMan Posted November 17, 2014 Share #11 Posted November 17, 2014 It's themsame thread. The chrome plating hosed things up. No, the M240, MM, and M-E have a shallower thread which means standard softies don't get enough purchase to stay in.
jdlaing Posted November 17, 2014 Share #12 Posted November 17, 2014 No, the M240, MM, and M-E have a shallower thread which means standard softies don't get enough purchase to stay in. The threads were probably cut without tolerance for,the plating. The plating then applied made the socket too tight. I checked when mine wouldn't fit and the thread count and pitch is correct. Revdockj Posted November 17, 2014 Share #13 Posted November 17, 2014 The same issue when the menu is set to discreet & soft. It won't lock when depressed half way.
pico Posted November 17, 2014 Share #14 Posted November 17, 2014 The same issue when the menu is set to discreet & soft. It won't lock when depressed half way. Of course! Soft obviates exposure lock - if that's what you refer to,

If a part does not work because of the chrome plate, then it is just plain wrong.. I bought one of Tom's softies and I still couldn't work the shutter release the way it works without the softie on my M-E.
lanetomlane Posted November 24, 2014 Author Share #16 Posted November 24, 2014 Just for information: the softie I had problems with on the Monochrom is exactly the same as one that works perfectly on the M. I seem to remember buying the pair from Germany after seeing an advert in LFI. Regards, Tom
nikau Posted November 24, 2014 Share #17 Posted November 24, 2014 Interesting thread. I've got a couple of Chinese knock-off softies ($6 for two, I think) and they work perfectly well on my M9-P, MM and all my film Leicas!
