50mm pre-asph lux

I think my 50pre asp, 43mm, is the lens that made me stay with Leica.:D I use it with the external original Leica hood. You can clip this hood on the lens.

VERY nice bokeh, makes beautiful pictures. Does someone know how this lens performs on the M8. Any problems compared to the use with film?

Must be a pre 1995 version. The last one with built-in hood (pics above) is E46.

I've the same type--circa 1987--and it's still got that '70's thang goin' on the M8... but it does feel less open/airy due to the crop-factor.

Am I right in thinking this lens is the same as the 'millennium' screw thread Summilux issued by leica as a limited edition in 1999 - 2000

not sure. pictures?

its 39295xx

If your lens is black, must be a # 11868 like this one.

Perhaps from 2002 or 2003 but it is difficult to say.

The screwmount # 11621 has the same optical formula as the # 11868 above AFAIK.

I thought I would post some examples. M8-iso160

The first three are from the pre-asph lux either wide open or f2. I find it almost a little too gauzy wide open, 2 or 2.8 it crisps up, the downside is that you lose some of the isolating power of the blurr in the background. I used the magnifier, and was able to get the focus accurately about 75% of the time, no tripod. I think you can see that the lens is not quite long enough for this kind of work, at least compared to the next post with 5D 85 1.2 images

the next three are from the 5D and 85 1.2L, all wide open, shot in winter, on a darker day, iso1600, some with fill flash using the amazing hi speed sync option of the canon flash.

You can see the isolating power of the 1.2, and also how the extra length helps too. downside was my focusing was only usually about 50% accurate, probably due to my inexperience with the lens, also due to the fact that I was not very close to the subject, which makes it harder for the autofocus to do its job. Af is nice if you are making "nice" headshots, but if you try to shoot looser, it has trouble. Manual focusing with the soft 5D groundglass wide open at 10ft on an eyeball is imo-very difficult. I would get the manual focus screen minimum from canon if I bought this lens. But the look is great.

The differences are as follows, I used Aperture for the 5D files, and Lightroom for the Leica files.

I did not intend this to be pixel peeping really, but more my experience of using the two cameras for exactly the same assignment for example: it was a lot easier focusing the M8, but easier to previsualize the oof with the 5d since I was using the limited dof as a solution. I had to work more in my imagination with the Leica, and a lot looser. There was a lot of cropping afterwards to eliminate distractions, etc. also I felt I had to tighten up the 50 lux and crop down a little to keep the look. It really is not long enough at 65mm for this kind of thing. the 75lux would be better. As I said also, I found the 50lux wide open a little too soft, it is optimal imo at 2.8 for this kind of thing, it has more contrast there and snaps the portrait better off the background.

The 85L is just a wonderful lens, but very had to use, bottom line, if you are not shooting a traditional head and shoulders with it, where I was more like 90% on focus, you will have focus errors with autofocus. Interestingly it was more accurate with the fill flash, I had a lot more usable frames. the manual focus screen for the 5D would be my investment if I had a 5D, because i really like what you can do with this lens. And I think the 75 the M8 would be similar, but not as good for this since I need to "see" the oof area to compose these pics, just how the figure overlaps blurred lights in the bg for example. So for me, the 75 would not be a solution, but that has more to do with what rangefinders are good at and what slrs are good at. If I could pic up an inexpensive 75, for example the voightlander, I could save myself the 4000 for the 5D/851.2L...

before anyone says "look at the clarity of the leica glass"...the sun was shining on the leica day, it was very overcast on the 5D day....but then again, the sun does always shine on leica days right...(G)....

the serial # on mine begins with 39...

is there a good resource to check such things?

Nearly all Leica literature of the gear fetishist kind give tables of lens numbers sorted by years. E.g. Erwin Puts 'Leica lens compendium' or Dennis Laney's 'Leica Collector's Handbook'.

As for your own lens, here are the latest numbers I know:

2000 3882997 ...

2001 3912126 ...

2002 3933014 ...

2003 3960210 ...
