Caught this historically significant & completely restored 917 'Kurzheck" ( first 917 to ever finish a race and be classified ) being prepared for a professional shoot in the 'photo niche' at Canepa Design.

 

Leica M-P, 35mm Summicron Asph., f4.0 @ 1/30 - ISO 400 - handheld - LR 5.

This pre-shooting shot I like, thanks for sharing!

 

Funny you guys thought it is a model. I have some model 917 slotcars which are so detailed I think a shot of them would look similar (if stopped down and with the right camera sensor size). Some of those models even have painted road dust which makes them look more real than Q-tip cleaned originals ;) Everytime I see those 917 "in action" (on real race tracks, but sometimes show laps), I hope the driver wears a fitting original helmet (at least classic looking), so my shot looks authentic.

Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen, but rest assured, this is most emphatically not a model.

 

Attached please see the photo with the immaculately restored Corvette in the foreground, but more importantly with the two gents checking out the 917 in the background for size reference. These are diminuitive cars, and quite light - less than 2000 lbs. fueled w/ driver at the starting line. To properly 'hook up' with the asphalt at speed and provide the fabled handling, 917 K models developed enough down-force at top speed ( approx. 200mph ) to exert the equivalent of 3-3700 lbs of down-force on the tires during races, considerably enlarging the contact patches. "Normal" everyday passenger car tires which we are used to seeing, even VR rated UH performance models, simply do not have the structure to resist deformation and would fail in short order on a race car.

 

The next photo shows 917 No.21, shows the virtually identical, highly original ex-Pedro Rodriguez training / set-up car for the purpose of illustrating the same phenomenon, i.e. no flattening of the tires at rest.

 

The next photo shows the 917, Serial # 004 / 017 at its post-restoration debut at the Carmel Concours-on-the-Avenue in August, where it won "Best-of-Show" with a perfect score of 100 points.

 

The final photo shows another, hopefully less "toy-like"view of the 917 in b & w, since I believe that mechanical objects, such a cars, planes, architecture, etc. probably benefit from removing the distraction of color to allow concentrating on shape, design, intent, function and details.

Stuart, as a complete non-sequitur, Porsche of North America just announced that their "Rennsport Reunion 5", a dazzling, over-the-top, once-every-four-years, all-Porsche historic racecar gathering featuring about 500+ cars and legendary drivers will be held at Laguna Seca October 9 through 11, 2015 ( get it, 911 - clever those Germans, nicht wahr ). If you enjoy cars & motorsports as much as it appears you do, I cannot recommend it highly enough - I'll be happy to provide tour guide services……. and we'll excersize our Leicas. Perfect time for a California trip.

Hmm. October 9 though 11. Maybe, but we must see how Barbara plans to spend our vacations in 2015. So far, only three weeks in Nicaragua are booked.
