atournas Posted October 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) An app is being developed (beta stage at present) for turning a smartphone into a cosmic ray event detector/counter; it is here: CRAYFIS You may read the preliminary paper at [1410.2895] Observing Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays with Smartphones (also readable by non-specialists). The interesting aspect of the project is that the app essentially detects possible hazardous events for a camera's sensor, too. Paul
Advertisement Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Hi atournas, Take a look here Your smartphone as a cosmic ray detector. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted October 20, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 20, 2014 Interesting and probably useful. However, what to do if such an event occurs? Grab your camera and head for the deepest mineshaft in the area?
mjh Posted October 20, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 20, 2014 The app as such probably won’t provide any useful data as it only captures isolated incidents that are insufficient for predicting anything. This project needs thousands of smartphones running the app in a certain area so that particle showers or local radiation levels can be calculated from the data supplied by the participating phones. I suppose those results – if derived in real time – could be sent back to the apps and be displayed in some way. The practical use of this would probably be limited; this is all about the advancement of science so far.

Grab your camera and head for the deepest mineshaft in the area? not sure why you remark "if such an event occurs" as they're happening pretty much all the time, and not acutely hazardous (unless you're an inter-galactic traveler !). For any interested geeks, there is also the DECO (Distributed Electronic Cosmic-ray Observatory) app but this doesn't have the array capability of the Crayfis app: How to turn your Android phone into a cosmic ray detector | KurzweilAI

Grab your camera and head for the deepest mineshaft in the area? Perhaps Luigi will produce a line of ever-ready cases made of lead for M series cameras. Available in the following colours: grey, slate, leaden, smokey, ash, and battleship. Pete.
