richfx Posted October 15, 2014 Author Share #21 Posted October 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) No. The body has never been dropped or subjected to rapid heat / cold extremes or changes, and has been treated with care since new. Apparently, this is a design and/or manufacturing defect in the joining of the sensor to its glass cover. It is the glass cover that cracks, as I understand it, so it would appear that the frame or other mechanism by which it and the sensor are mated is a bit tight in one or more of its corners (or elsewhere), which ultimately result in it giving way. Dan Bachmann Posted October 15, 2014 Share #22 Posted October 15, 2014 I have something a bit different - a dark line in my images. On the sensor it looks like a very bright line - apparently the coating has come off. Unfortunately Leica (Germany via Mayfair in London) is requesting nearly £1,600 to replace the sensor (including taxes). While I wait for more sensors to come in stock, I have been given a loaner camera; however, I do wonder if I can live with the line and put that cash towards another camera (Leica or otherwise). bocaburger Posted October 15, 2014 Share #23 Posted October 15, 2014 I was under the impression that coating breakdown was also a sensor defect Leica was fixing gratis. If it were me I would contact Leica Germany directly and discuss this with them to see if a better solution can be worked out.
jaapv Posted October 15, 2014 Share #24 Posted October 15, 2014 Idk but from what I can glean only from reading this forum, reports of spontaneous sensor glass cracks seem no less prevalent than those others. From what I learnt from my contacts at CS sensor cracks, whilst not unknown due to the extra thin cover class, have become a rarity after the initial batch that was made to a too wide tolerance
bocaburger Posted October 16, 2014 Share #25 Posted October 16, 2014 I seem to recall there was a thread on this forum discussing the topic and there were reports of it happening across a wide range of serial numbers and even on a few M9P's. I haven't heard of it happening with an M-E yet though. So it may be the manufacturer tightened their QC.
