Very interesting bokeh with the Petzval. Are you happy with the lens?

I've had it for a while and used it fairly intermittently ..... it is the sort of lens you put on the camera and and then deliberately go and hunt for subjects that will look good.

The lens itself is very well made and does tend to turn heads ...... optically it seems very good ....... the characteristic swirly bokeh at f2.2-2.8 is replaced by excellent sharpness at f5.6 plus ...... almost indistinguishable from my 100/2.8 R macro......

Wide open the sharp area is very limited to dead centre ...... so with portraiture you would need to compose with eyes centre and crop afterwards .... which is something I realised in retrospect...... otherwise you just get a soft focus arty shot.

To get the maximum swirly bokeh the background needs to about the same distance as the subject from the camera....... and some sort of regular pattern gives the best effect.... like the pebbles on the passionflower shot.

Using it with focus peaking on the M is a breeze ...... and the primitive looking rack and pinion focussing is actually very accurate. I did worry about crud getting in the aperture slot ..... but this has not been a problem, and in fact you can unscrew the front lens element section to clean the internal surfaces if needed.

It's a fun lens to use and I don't regret buying it :)

Some more pics :

This is a near to 100% crop of the centre of the bee shot showing it is in fact in focus and sharp ......

A shot at f5.6 .... which is already cropped ...... with a true 100% crop ..... colour rendition is very faithful....

This is what I mean about portraits ...... unless you are careful you just get a general soft focus effect ....... and the background doesn't give you any interesting bokeh to make the image stand out ....... nice, but not something you would need this particular lens to do

this is an uncropped version of the other photo I posted ........ the bokeh has a very strange impressionistic look ........ just a pity the central subject was uninspiring. Like the Nocti at 0.95 you can push sharpening to 100% in LR with no deterioration in image quality and surprisingly little additional noise ..... as the only part of the image that gets processed much is actually tiny ......

This lens is not for everyone, but for me it is a keeper ...... :)

Thank you for the detailed explanation and additional posts. The lens is uncannily sharp in the center and the bokeh is like no other. I absolutely love the portrait you did with it, even with the softness on her face. Really outstanding.
