Advertisement Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Hi Paul J, Take a look here Leica website- new products for Photokina. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted September 16, 2014 Share #22 Posted September 16, 2014 Yes, what's that all about? You would think they could incorporate the new T fitting, but with a leather strap It makes no difference, this is a collector's camera, not one that's intended to be used. jpattison Posted September 16, 2014 Share #23 Posted September 16, 2014 M System M60 with a major wank of an unboxing video. Let me quote from page 12/13 of "The Leica and Leicaflex" by Theo M. Scheerer (published 1962, updated 1970) ... Under the heading "The only luxury"... "There is one luxury the firm of Leitz indulges in: it has indeed almost become a ritual. It springs from the idea that precious things should also be presented in an elegant manner. Please make sure to get your Leitz products in their original cases. Otherwise you will irrevocably lose that delightful moment, the climax of unwrapping your new Leica and it's accessories from their stylish "travelling clothes". I would not like to call them wrapping - it sounds too prosaic for my taste." John
MarkP Posted September 16, 2014 Author Share #24 Posted September 16, 2014 Clearly a camera for serious users. Obviously those who only want the raw essence of Leica photography don't want strap lugs or a cable release . ...but it does have a tripod socket . thighslapper Posted September 17, 2014 Share #25 Posted September 17, 2014 The new S with the Maestro 2 processor looks interesting - faster AF, faster live-view, better image quality at all ISO's, continuous 3.5 fps and 4k video etc ........... ....... particularly as they are likely to shoehorn a variant of this into the next M .... almost certainly with AF capability and lenses developed from the current T line .... but FF and with M/R quality optics....... Leica are methodical and fairly predictable if you look at their recent track record .... it is not that difficult to see what is coming down the line ...... and it looks quite tempting ..... M will never be AF It will get the Maestro 2 though I doubt whether Leica will ever introduce another FF system to compete with M
thighslapper Posted September 17, 2014 Share #27 Posted September 17, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) M will never be AF 50 quid that the next M will support AF lenses ...... You are going to lose money .... so don't accept the bet .......
colonel Posted September 18, 2014 Share #28 Posted September 18, 2014 50 quid that the next M will support AF lenses ...... You are going to lose money .... so don't accept the bet ....... Would contradict Karbe who said that the reason they had designed a new mount for the T and not used the M mount was due to its inherent unsuitability in many areas for an AF camera, etc.
IkarusJohn Posted September 21, 2014 Share #29 Posted September 21, 2014 50 quid that the next M will support AF lenses ...... You are going to lose money .... so don't accept the bet ....... I'll take that bet - Stefan Daniel's interview explain that the M lens is 80% glass, 20% mounting and mechanics. They're happy with the size. AF lenses 50-50, which means for full frame, they're too big. This was a significant consideration in the APS-C sensor choice. I don't believe M cameras will ever be AF. mjh Posted September 22, 2014 Share #30 Posted September 22, 2014 I don't believe M cameras will ever be AF. Neither do I. In that interview with Stefan Daniel I had mentioned that some customers were expecting something like the Sony A7 from Leica, arguing that Sony had proven how small a full-frame mirrorless AF camera could be, and since Leica had proven they could build really small full-frame lenses, people were hoping for a combination of both. That prompted his remark about M lenses being 80% optics and 20% mechanics whereas with modern AF lenses (including Leica’s own) it was more like 50%/50%. jlindstrom Posted September 23, 2014 Share #31 Posted September 23, 2014 Indeed, no AF for the M. Would be more likely for Leica to take the Sony e-mount kind of solution and expand T-series into full frame (providing the mount has room for it, I don't know if it does). Even then they need to be carefull not to dig into M sales figures. So no AF M, full frame T-series plausible would be my bet. //Juha
stunsworth Posted September 23, 2014 Share #32 Posted September 23, 2014 Indeed, no AF for the M Having used AF on a camera with an optical viewfinder - Fuji X-Pro 1 - for the last 6 months or so, all I can say is that I hope Leica never goes down the AF route on the M. If they do then I pray that they keep the current rangefinder system as well as adding AF. I'm finding that I'm getting a lot more out of focus shots with the Fuji than I ever did manually focussing with an Leica M.
jaapv Posted September 23, 2014 Share #33 Posted September 23, 2014 Well seeing the camera MUST be retrocompatible, I can't see how they could ever drop the rangefinder system. At worst it would be some kind of hybrid system - I hope not.
LocalHero1953 Posted September 23, 2014 Share #34 Posted September 23, 2014 I can't see a new M being AF either. If the OVF/RF is left in, you would just add bulk to the system, and put off those who want a simple system (look at the complaints about the M button). Leave the OVF/RF out, and you lose most of your current customers. But the T mount is big enough for FF, so there is a potential gap in the range for a FF T-mount AF camera that might attract a customer base that sees the M as too retro, too manual and too hardcore (i.e. difficult), and the T as not a real man's camera.
