250swb Posted September 10, 2014 Share #21 Posted September 10, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica’s naming system is actually quite predictable. For example, after the introduction of the M (Typ 240) I had predicted that a version with some added features would be called the ‘M-P (Typ whatever)’. Don't you think everybody predicted an M-P? It is now a Leica tradition to tart up an aging body just before introducing a new one. As we all know, it stands for 'professional', so now professionals can use the camera that presumably so far has only been good enough for amateurs. Another example of the skewed logic of the naming system and the feature set. Imagine, would Nikon make a professional camera knowing full well they had features they could have added, like a tougher screen, but hold them back for cynical 'updates' at the end of the model's life? But that is a lesser problem for Leica than the one the 'man in the street' has in interpreting a naming structure which is becoming dense and inarticulate. You can be sure there won't be many purchases on the spur of the moment, somebody running into a Leica shop and saying 'give me the latest and best camera Leica make', because they will need to go on a course and pass an exam first. That is why other camera companies will cash in, not because the comical notion of Leica's 'jewel like quality' doesn't provide posing potential, but because most people with an open mind just want to take a picture, and pointing at a camera on the highest rung of the ladder is easier than sifting through an ever more complicated and bushy family tree. Advertisement Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Hi 250swb, Take a look here Leica M-A. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mjh Posted September 10, 2014 Share #22 Posted September 10, 2014 Don't you think everybody predicted an M-P? I would have thought so, but when it was announced some were surprised about the name, even when it was completely predictable. As we all know, it stands for 'professional', so now professionals can use the camera that presumably so far has only been good enough for amateurs. As I’ve said before, just forget about this ‘professional’ nonsense. An M-P isn’t any more or less professional than an M. ‘P’ is just the letter designating a model with some added features. But that is a lesser problem for Leica than the one the 'man in the street' has in interpreting a naming structure which is becoming dense and inarticulate. The ‘man in the street’ doesn’t care either way. Don’t expect too much from a camera name; it won’t tell you that much about what a camera is. masjah Posted September 10, 2014 Share #23 Posted September 10, 2014 I do agree about the illogicality of the "P for Professional" bit. Perhaps it would make more sense smiply to regard the M-P as the M-Plus.
mjh Posted September 10, 2014 Share #24 Posted September 10, 2014 I do agree about the illogicality of the "P for Professional" bit. For Leica it is “M-P. Perfect Understatement”. There are “professional video recordings” mentioned somewhere on the website, but that’s about it.
jaapv Posted September 10, 2014 Share #25 Posted September 10, 2014 I do agree about the illogicality of the "P for Professional" bit. Perhaps it would make more sense smiply to regard the M-P as the M-Plus. With every other piece of gear and software called "Pro" it is an unavoidable side-effect of present-day marketing, I fear. The number of beginners that I see on "Racing" skis is amazing as well...
Kloss Posted September 10, 2014 Author Share #26 Posted September 10, 2014 As I’ve said before, just forget about this ‘professional’ nonsense. An M-P isn’t any more or less professional than an M. ‘P’ is just the letter designating a model with some added features. But wasn't it Leica itselfs figuring out that the Leica M9-P was the derivative from the M9 targeting to the special needs of professional photographers? Die Leica Camera AG, Solms, stellt eine neue Version der weltweit kleinsten Systemkamera mit Vollformatsensor vor: Die Leica M9-P. This new model will sit alongside the Leica M9 in the company’s rangefinder portfolio, providing an alternative, even more discreet and resilient design that further reinforces the quintessential nature of the M9 – and particularly meets the needs of professional photographers. The new model will be available in a classic silver chrome or subtle black paint finish.Offering the same technical specifications as the highly successfully Leica M9, the M9-P combines all the benefits of the original: compact size, full-frame, 18 megapixel 24 x 36mm sensor (35mm format), sophisticated image processing and robust construction, with features designed for the professional user or photographers who prefer a pure, even more unobtrusive styling. mjh Posted September 10, 2014 Share #27 Posted September 10, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Excessive use of ‘professional’ in marketing copy has always been silly; thankfully they have stopped doing this. (By the way, just because there is an S-P it doesn’t imply that the S was not a professional camera.)

BR Thomas Well, if we are discussing the M-P today, wouldn't it be more informative to base the discussion on the marketing background of the M-P instead of the M9P? In that case you could as well quote from the flyer of the M4P.
colonel Posted September 10, 2014 Share #29 Posted September 10, 2014 Don't we all ignore marketing anyway ? Apple (Tim Cook) said yesterday that the iPhone 6 is "... Appreciably better in every single way ..." then all Android phones, when we know the reality is that the spec for the 6 Plus actually just caught up with 2012 premier android specs (I say this as a 5s owner). Obviously complete hogwash, however I will still probably buy one
bruniroquai Posted September 10, 2014 Share #30 Posted September 10, 2014 Are You really arguing about the nomenclature of the cameras? That bored are You? Or it's just GAS pre-photokina? indergaard Posted September 18, 2014 Share #33 Posted September 18, 2014 Is the M-A a replacement for the MP (film)? I sure hope not! The M-A has no light meter. The MP does. Which makes the MP far more attractive in my opinion.
