Surfs up Rudolfs

Love this image! I've never previously seen a photo of reindeer bathing, though it makes sense as cattle and horses (both species are actually strong swimmers & float like corks)

will voluntarily immerse themselves in dams or rivers on a hot day....so why not reindeer?

Hello Alf,

Nice photo.

How often & during what parts of the year do they go into the sea water?

When they do go in the water what do they do?

Do they stay very long or go out very far?

Are they ever bothered by polar bears when they do this?

Best Regards,

Michael

Thanks,

I dont think the reindeers bath often. In fact I have only seem them using snow "bathing" to cool down before. This is the first time I have seen active bathing in seawater.

These reinderrs only waded out into the waves and stood there for a while.

But the Norweian reindeers have their migration routes. So during spring they move from inland to the cost and islands. During this trekking they often swim quite long distnances .

No, all the polar bears ahve suffered severe penquin attacks :p;):D. Sorry, I will try to behave; no there are no polar bears at Norwegian mainland.
