"Leica R4s Model P" & Data Back Issue

This is Kinda' a strange one for me and I hope someone has the answer to this:

I recently purchased a DB Leica R4 Data Back. Do not care if the dates were wrong, just needed some coding. Works fine, BUT !!

When I use the Data Back on the camera the frame counter does not move from the start position. With the standard back on, the frame counter works fine.

I usually have the R motor winder (3 contact one) on the camera and same result either way.

Does the Data Back negate the frame (film) Counter or ????

Advise Please.

Thanks

The camera back plate triggers the counter reset when the back is opened. If the camera reset switch doesn't get activated with the back closed, the counter stays in reset mode, and won't move.

On the body there is reset "lug" in the upper light seal above the sprocket area - the silver block in this snapshot:

The back should have a matching tab that presses that lug inwards when the back is closed. Here's the lug on a standard R4 back:

Check your data back for the tab, and if there, see if the back is deformed or something so it won't press the reset lug in the body.

It looks like your data back light seals around the edges have been replaced with thicker foam strips. Perhaps they don't compress as easily and hold the back out a bit farther, so the reset latch doesn't press in far enough. Try squeezing that area of the back tighter against the body as you cock the shutter (no need to load film), and see if the counter moves. If so, it may reset back as soon as you stop squeezing that edge tight.

The counter is purely mechanical, and the fit of the back looks like the only difference that could affect it.

Tom,

You were real close. I took the light seals off and same deal. I then pushed the back in and it worked, so I bent the back ever so slightly and it now works like a charm. I'll get some light seal material and go from there.

Many Thanks,

Randy
