eronald Posted May 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) To make this picture, I used Neat Image and the camera happens to be an M8. If I had taken the1Ds2 I would not have needed Neat Image ...but I probably would not have got the picture. Edmund
Advertisement Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Hi eronald, Take a look here Neat Image Concert Picture (M8).. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted May 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 4, 2007 This is a good example - we must loosen ourself from the "film"mindset. Forget about the difference between grain and digital noise - this is a very good photograph that works the way it is.
arminw Posted May 4, 2007 Share #3 Posted May 4, 2007 Nice Shot Edmund! You made good use of the available light and the noise doesn't bother me. Did you use a M8 profile with Neat Image ? I use this program too, but couldn't find any profiles for my M8 ....
wattsy Posted May 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 4, 2007 Personally I'm not convinced. It's a nice enough shot but I suspect it would be unacceptable to any of my clients. I'd be interested to see a version of it without the Neat Image processing applied to it - I have a feeling I'd prefer it that way.
rosuna Posted May 4, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 4, 2007 For this kind of work, Canon DSLR are the best option.

I too would prefer it rthat way - but if I sent that out the door I would not get invited back. This is a less tight crop, which shows some of what was retouched out, no NI applied, just curves. eronald Posted May 4, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted May 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) And here is the original (21mm Asph) Let me clear, I profiled, cropped, noise reduced curved and retouched the poor thing to death. But what I wanted was a showcase image, not a news picture, and that's what I got. And if I maybe blunt, it has my name on it so it can have my "look". For 1/15 s in light so bad I couldn't see, it's ok. And yes, next time I'll just ask for the lights to be turned up for my photo. Edmund
jaapv Posted May 4, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 4, 2007 For this kind of work, Canon DSLR are the best option. I doubt it - the poor thing would have been unable to focus
wparsonsgisnet Posted May 4, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 4, 2007 Edmund, I agree that Neat Image contributes significantly to the image. Nice shot.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 4, 2007 Share #10 Posted May 4, 2007 It has a nice effect on it, perfectly fits this type of image
Guest licht Posted May 4, 2007 Share #11 Posted May 4, 2007 Poooh! It looks like T-MAX 3200 in Rodinal handcolored by someone who has done this the first time. But as it´s shot with Leica it´s very very nice of course.
wparsonsgisnet Posted May 4, 2007 Share #12 Posted May 4, 2007 Yup, it's true the producers of the show needed Guy to come in and light it. However, I take exception to the previous comment. This shot has a good sense of the atmosphere of the location. It would make an excellent album cover and would present very well in a photo exhibition. There is a palpable 3-dimensionality to it and I feel like I'm looking in upon a scene in a different place altogether. Again, nice pic.
Jamie Roberts Posted May 4, 2007 Share #13 Posted May 4, 2007 I doubt it - the poor thing would have been unable to focus No-one is more critical than I am of Canon AF, but it would have focused on the guitar / hand just fine, believe me EDIT: but the light on the faces is so poor, focus would not matter, and neither would higher ISO. Jamie Roberts Posted May 4, 2007 Share #14 Posted May 4, 2007 BTW--I had a quick 10 minute play with Edmund's JPEG (hope you don't mind, Edmund), to show that in situation like this--1ds2 or M8--I usually add noise, not subtract it. There are a lot of ways to do this, but when you have hideously contrasty light and underexposure (under in the shadow detail), you really are working too hard, I think, to recreate what ain't there. (As it turns out, I suspect the RAW file here has a lot of usable detail; but you need to reconstruct the blue channel from the other channels--probably the green is best)... So you can always go more noise, more contrast Pardon the totally blown highlight detail--I told you this was quick!
