sblutter Posted August 6, 2014 Share #1  Posted August 6, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) From reading this area, I picked up a 40 Rokkor, have had the Summi 40C since buying a CL new a long time ago using it sparingly.  I made a shot I really like but it had an odd softness to it. Due to pp? I did use with PS's perspective control... maybe that was it.  Decided to do some informal tests wide open, how I'm shooting right now. These are subjective from a long time pro & artist:  Again, wide open only (after 5.6 all below perform well)  My orig 40C has the exact same softness. These lenses are indeed identical right down to poorly designed focus tab. This softness is a new tool in the bag.  Next, Summi 50 2.0, ver IV. Flawless - a real champ & as a native M3 50 guy, has been my go to forever.  Summi 35 2.0 ASPH. Every bit as good as the 50, impressed b/c I rarely use 35 - but just may now.  Voight 35 2.5 panckake. Really really close to the Summi 35. At 4.0+, has a very nice crispness. Would be a great pocketable piece if you're not carrying a bag and don't want to worry about expensive damage / theft.  Conclusion, the 40's wont work for my current project but have a quality that may be useful.  Pic below was with the Rokkor 40. The boka in the fencing and overall softness is what caught my attention. I need the ball to be tack sharp. This one will be reshot next time it rains - the puddles on the bench, to me, add a loneliness I want.  Hope someone finds this useful - good shooting! Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Hi sblutter, Take a look here Shoot off: 35 to 50. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted August 6, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted August 6, 2014 At f/2, the Rokkor 40/2 is sharp in the center but not in borders and corners where it is rather soft. For sharper results at f/2 there i would choose a Summilux 35/1.4 asph or a Summicron 35/2 asph. Adjusting contrast and sharpening might help also but you know this certainly. sblutter Posted August 9, 2014 Author Share #3  Posted August 9, 2014 Here reshot with 'Cron 50 @ 2.0 (and reconsidered warmer). 'Cron 35 rendered very well also but I just didn't like it.  Got what I wanted: Welcome, dear visitor!
