The cost of the camera really does not come into that equation. I do appreciate others views and ideas, and with the XV Raw is a good route. PP is now an art, not everybody wants to partake.. At one time I was fond of the Unsharp Mask in Elements and maybe a touch of Saturation. Now I find my settings pretty much offer what I require. If in doubt, Raw is the best alternative.. Peter L Posted August 5, 2014 Share #22 Posted August 5, 2014 My setting EV - 2/3 was determined by extensive testing of EV 0 -1/3and-2/3 ,with skin tone (Caucasian ) and nature colours , grasses , trees, flowers , sky, etc. , Not a large difference between -1/3 and -2/3 , I prefer -2/3 , perhaps something to do with the sensitivity of the sensor , not my eyes . It is unlikely , that JPEG images would be "harsher" with less light , quite the opposite . Sir, the higher the -EV the darker the shadows etc,, become,,,,,,,,, therefore:- Harsher.. Regards, L. Please keep personal opinions to yourself......... My eye is Perfect after a total rebuild.. My right eye went AWOL..many years ago............... If I used the word "Harsh" it was not in relation to more or less light.. To expand:- with -2/3EV I find the darks are too heavy... Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

As opposed to how I use my two M9's and Canon 5D Mk 3 etc), I was and am very curious to discover if others felt the same way? And if so what basic camera jpeg settings they had arrived at? RickP Posted August 8, 2014 Share #28 Posted August 8, 2014 For most situations - I find -2/3 a bit dark - I use -1/3 -..it seems to be good most of the time. I also find the JPEGS to be more than satisfactory most of the time, but I also shoot raw in case of unusual lighting - sometimes run them through HDR (Oleneo) to get Dynamic Range where it needs to be.. I have had the XV for a month or so - still learning what is needed - I set JPEGS at : Standard film, Medium High Sharpness Standard Saturation Medium high contrast I tweak a bit in Post Processing - but not much.
