Has anybody tried the peak design everyday messenger bag? It looks interesting enough.

On the other hand, I tried how the S fits in the Oberwerth München today in a photo shop here in Munich, and it really doesn't seem to work: the S needs 13 cm in depth.

Manolo, I got mine last week after a wait of several weeks. I have run the gamut of bags from Lowe, Kata, Crumpler and others. The PD bag is without doubt the most thoughtfully designed and option rich bag I have ever owned. It is a technological tour de force writ small. The materials are of the highest quality and beautifully constructed. But the real strength is the thought and imagination that went into creating a bag that was truly designed from whole cloth. For those interested: https://www.peakdesign.com/product/bags/the-everyday-messenger/

As for the fit, I removed one of the three unique, origami-like dividers. The body with the 70 mounted fits perfectly. Snug for sure, but immediately extractable. As I have only the 70mm, I can not say how many other lenses would fit. Certainly one more, and possibly two - max. Seems to me to be the perfect two lens bag (with one mounted). I am getting Contax equivalents that are smaller in girth.

It is the most comfortable bag I have worn. Not sure how they did it but the bag rides very closely to the body. Wicked comfortable strap, with an integrated cross body strap to stabilize. The clasp is really cool. No noisy Velcro. Rather a unique ladder-like configuration that latches down mechanically and then magnetically. Room for a small notebook and all kinds of cubbies to fill with stuff. Peak also makes a very interesting clamp device that attaches to a belt - or to the bag. My son has it and it works very well.

I will post pics if anyone is interested in seeing the S/70mm in it.

Damn fine bag.

Does it have a solid base (like a Billingham)? I have a similar looking Think Tank Retrospect 30 which I take the 2S and three lenses in, usually body mounted to a lens in the middle then a lens either side. However, once the camera/lens is removed the bag sort of folds in half due to no firm base...

Billingham is resurrecting the S series, adding a new S4 that's perfect for the S with 3 or 4 lenses.

For some reason a store in Hong Kong has these in stock when they're not listed yet on Billingham's website.

I like the S series for their shallowness (front to back), simple designs, and the use of a zipper for the main compartment. They also lack a Billingham batch, which I dislike on the Hadley series.

I recently switched from an old S3 to a new S3. The old S3 fits 3 S lenses without hoods very snugly but is too small for the body. The new one fits three S lenses without hoods comfortably (but without being overly deep so that they're hard to retrieve), or a body plus two lenses unmounted, all side by side.

I use it as a lens bag, wearing the camera + one lens on my body, if I go out with a 4-lens kit.

If I go with a 2-lens kit, I put the camera inside too.

David, I much appreciate your informed opinion. Thank you! We are all in search of the (non existant) perfect bag, with the result on my side of having a closet full of them... The last count gave a total of 21... Nevertheless, I will order that peak design bag: it looks terrific, and 22 is a nice number.

BTW, which color did you buy? I would like to see how the S+70 fits in: yes, please do post pics! Thank you!

Manolo, glad you found my observations helpful. I got the grey one. Really handsome and stout fabric. Toughest of any bag I own. Hard on the outside and soft on the inside.

Attached is an image of the S with the 70mm attached. In the second bay is my Contax 120mm that is quite swallowed up. Clearly room for another lens as well. Once very cool feature is the long zipper on the top of the flap that permits access to the interior without having to open the bag. Perfect for lens change. Let me know what you think.

Best,

David

I am in a vintage phase at the moment, but I have to say that bag does look quite nice. I like that it is able to really swallow a sizable camera/lens combo the way it does. I could not really see myself carrying more than three lenses at a time either. In fact, I am not likely to carry more than two. Regardless, seems like plenty of room either way. Congrats on the new bag.

David, how do you find the depth (from top to bottom) of the bag. I looked at one recently and it seemed to be very deep such that there was a lot of extra room above any equipment in the bag that seemed to be unnecessary.

No doubt, it is deep. But I like that because it gives me room for stuff - jacket, hat, gloves, etc. I have not tried it, but I suspect it is deep enough to accommodate the camera in a vertical position, screen down/lens up. That would open up more adjacent space.

I neglected to mention that the bag can accommodate a tripod as well. There is a sleeve that runs the length of the flap. You insert one leg and push it to the hilt. There is an elastic band that keeps the legs secured together. You can then close the cover with the tripod secured. Very cool. I fits my three section Gitzo with RRS ballhead.

This bag has it all.

Morning

I shoot with a couple of S bodies commercially and have settled on 2 bags, for event/walk about stuff I use a F-stop Ando 18, it's great for carrying 2 bodies with lenses attached and a third lens in the centre, here with 180 on one body, 35 on second and 70 in the centre..

It works very well because it's deep, also carries a 15" mbp which makes it perfect for most jobs.

For landscape and personal stuff I use the F-stop Loka UL, really comfortable bag..

May be of interest to those looking, may not! These both work very well for me but not what you might call stylish, a bit like me!

I made a quick comparison on the Billingham, ONA Brixton, and PeakDesign. In the first picture, you can see the relative sizes of the bags. Moving the bags around, the Billingham feels like it was constructed for wartime in both construction and heft. The ONA is the smallest of the bags.

I put the 70mm attached to the 007 and the 180mm unattached in both the ONA and PeakDesign bags. The PeakDesign appears to be a bit deeper. It is also longer than the ONA. Each bag has its strengths: the ONA appears better for a camera and two lenses; the PeakDesign's latch is great; the PeakDesign's handle is better; the ONA's Mac pouch is inside; etc.

These two show the camera attached to the 70mm and the 180mm.

Form follows function. Personally, I like the way the F-Stop Gear looks, but I would still buy it even if I thought it was ugly. I love the ICU system and the flexibility it affords.
