Battery running itself down - Anyone else?

Yesterday when i picked up my M8, I was surprised to find it had a flat battery. No response at all after doing the usual things we all know. I assumed I must have knocked the switch on and as I have a Softie, the shutter was kept depressed, which ran the battery down. I put my other battery in and the M8 sprang to life and all was as normal. The flat battery took the normal 3 to 4 hours to charge. I was leaving this morning for a very quick trip back to the UK, where I was taking a number of other heavy and bulky items, so I just took the M8 with no spare battery and charger. When I got it out of my bag about three hours later, the switch was definitely in the OFF position. When I turned it on - nothing at all - no menu and with a voltmeter, the battery is flat. Has anyone else had this phenomenon? Running FW 1.102.

No I have not had that problem. If I'm doing something else with my time the camera may sit for 1-2 days without me handling it and turn it on. I put a freshly charged battery in it on Sunday and have taken about 20-30 shots with it since then and the battery still reads the full ?3? bars. Of course that could be do to another glitch in the battery meter but I don't think so. My M8 is fairly good at giving me the correct battery levels.

My battery doesn't run down even when the camera sits for days. It takes a lot of shots until it starts showing some loss of battery. I think it is your camera that is at fault and you should contact Leica.

First check in the menus to see what your auto power off setting is. I have found mine set at OFF, which of course means that the camera is always ON. Don't know how it got there, but if you leave the camera switched on, letting the screen backlight go out, it still will be consuming power staying ready for you. So checking all your menu settings to see if something got to the wrong setting is always wise when funny things happen.

Scott,

I have contacted my local UK Leica shop just 4 miles away from me and as luck would have it, they have an M8 battery in stock. They have put it on charge for me overnight (since I don't have my charger with me) and I will collect it tomorrow morning. My suspicions also lie in the direction of the menu power management but if the camera was turned off, as it definitely was this morning, that should not have come into play. Obviously I cannot check until I get a new charged battery into it. I am somewhat afraid it is angling for a month's holiday in Solms.
