Rangefinder not focusing at infinity

Hi,

the range finder on my M240 (3 months old) will not focus at infinity. It is fine up to infinity and same issue across all lenses. I presume I need to send it in for an adjustment.

I called the local Australian Leica repair agent who said they they need to send it back to Germany for repair / adjustment as they are not yet authorised to do the rap air in Australia.

Is that correct?

There is one little DIY adjustment you can try first and that is changing the setting of the roller wheel on the top of the camera mouth.

Change it in minimally small increments until you get coincidence at infinity. If the focusing is still correct at near distances you will have solved the problem.

If you are within driving distance of Wetzlar you could do a walkin at customer service. I would not be surprised if this were a problem they could solve whilst you wait - but no certainty here.

Or you could use the services of an independent camera technician who is familiar with rangefinders. But he will expect you to pay.

As far as I am aware Leica offer a collect and return service in Austria btw. Inquire at Customer Service Wetzlar. The telephone number is on Leica's website.

Jaap, I think Evering lives in Australia, not in Austria :)

Yep. Sorry, I misread. I have a number of excuses :D. In that case read "flying distance" :D:D.

No, that leaves the independent repair person as an alternative. Australian members might be able to do a recommendation.

The good new is you're better off having your camera sent to Germany rather than letting Camera Clinic anywhere near it. I've learned that first hand. Read down this page on how to adjust infinity yourself with a 2mm Allen key.

Just remember that even tiny movements make a difference. Even slight pressure on the allen key can make a difference. Double check at mid and close distances as you make each small adjustment. Takes me about 30 mins to get it perfect.

  • 5 weeks later...

Well ... so much for the 6 to 8 week turn around. I emailed Leica Germany today and they told me that I will have my camera back in 10 weeks from today - that will make it 3 and a half months in total.

This is very poor service. Not happy!

With a camera so young, a British dealer would possibly exchange/offer a loaner while it is away. Try your vendor and see what service he gives you.

Email Leica Australia and put your case firmly but politely. Leica Australia outsource the servicing so dont see what's going on, which is a real shame as I think they want to provide some service. They are the ones who may be able to put in a good word for you with Germany or organise a loaner.

I've been where you are, several times.

The OP is correct, last time I checked Leica will not allow the camera to be serviced locally in Australia yet, and insist it is sent back to Germany. Hopefully they will change their policy soon.

I've also heard some bad things Camera Clinic though not first hand. Can anyone recommend a reliable technician in Australia? I need to get my Macro Adapter M (previous version) adjusted for close focus...

Hi

I have been informed that Camera Clinic can't adjust the rangefinder mech on the M as the equipment is $500K and they haven;t purchased it.

Leica Australia came to the rescue and kindly (and very quickly) sent me a loan camera. The Leica rep - Daniel - was excellent.

thanks all.
