Vignette issue of ZM 28 on Leica M9

Hi, I wonder if any of you had similar issue like me on this. I have a Carl Zeiss ZM 28 f/2.8 lens and when I used it on my M9, it had serious vignette wide open and even stopped down to like f/4. I used manual coding to select it as Elmarit-M 28 f/2.8 ASPH and it didn't improve much. I purchased this lens by reading the comments like Ken Rockwell, who said the vignette is really unnoticeable even by adding two filters.

I am a former M8 user and still have M8 right now. ZM 28 is ok on M8, so is my Summarit 25 f/2.5 as only the center part is used. Yet after my purchase of a used M9, I found even my Summarit-M 35 had a slight vignette wide open.

I wonder if it is a common issue or something is wrong here. Thanks a lot!

I have the 28/2.8 Zeiss on my M9 without issues and it is coded for 28/2.8 ASPH. I would also try manually selecting the other 28 lenses from the menu and see if that helps. Or try the coding for the 21, which has more of a problem with vignetting than the 28 does.

Hi, I also tried the other Leica 28 lens coding including summicron, but doesn't help. I will give 21 a try. Is that possible my copy of ZM 28 sliver bad? I didn't use hood on it, but when I point it towards the white wall, I can clearly see the heavy vignette around the corner.

I love this lens on my M9 and have had no issues, setting the code as you have done.

I'm assuming you're not using a filter or a non-Zeiss, screw in hood. If you are, take them off. Otherwise, I think you should go to a camera shop and try another copy of the lens on your camera. If there's no vignette, then it's the lens.

If you still have a vignette with the shop lens, it's your camera. Have you updated to the latest firmware? If not, do. If you have, maybe you should try installing the firmware again.

Additionally, do you have any other wide lenses? Do they exhibit vignette and is it consistent with the ZM 28? If so, it might be your sensor.

…… that's all I got. Good luck.

I agree with not photographing white walls as well, unless you have a good reason for doing so. They will show vignetting very readily. Most people don't really take these kinds of pictures. Cornerfix would work and there are also corrections available in Lightroom.

Here are some quick results I tried last evening. I placed a B+W neutral filter in front of it, but after taking it out and shoot against the sky, I didn't notice any difference. I didn't use any hood in front of the lens, so that's all I got.

I first coded the lens by Leica 28 f/2.8 ASPH in the menu -> Manual. I shot the frame below with f/2.8, and you can clearly notice the heavy vignette around the corner.

After stopping down to f/4, and applied some vignette correction in LR, it looks a bit better:

After coding it to Leica 21 f/2.8 ASPH in the menu, it did look much better and reduce the vignette at the corners noticeably. Below is a test sky shot at f/4:

And at f/8, it looks pretty good though still has a bit vignette but I almost always added a bit for my images most of times:

So i think my copy of ZM 28 may be necessary to be coded as 21 ASPH for normal use as the vignette is way better controlled than coded as 28 f/2.8 ASPH. Maybe my copy of lens is an individual case here, as my M9 was just sent back from Leica NJ not long time ago for restoration to the factory standard, so I believe the sensor and the other hardware issues should not be a problem for the vignette here. But I don't have another copy of ZM 28, so I think I will be using this lens in coding 21 at least for now.

Thanks for everyone's help!
