I am very close to purchasing a 28mm Cron to partner my 50mm Lux although expect to hear a general announcement at Photokina ref 28mm Lux, although the wait list may be well into next year.....

Any guesses on price difference between 28mm Cron vs 28mm Lux, I am guessing maybe £1,000 - £1,200 premium over the Cron.... any other guesses out there?

Do I buy the Cron and enjoy... or wait for Lux?

If you like 28mm it is always better to have one and shoot with the lens than to wait for ever for next model. In UK there are plenty of second hand Summicrons 28mm retailing well below new price, check websites of Leica retailers.

Rationale for buying now is sound I think, as you said it will be some time before new model is available, usual high demand and customary faulty first batch issues will make it a long wait.

More than this i'm afraid. I would not be surprised if the 28/1.4 sells at the same price as the 24/1.4 (6,200 EUR) or a bit less perhaps? Just a guess though.

Edit: 5,500 EUR according to Mark Norton above.

Buy a second hand copy of the 28mm Summicron now.

Buy it from a reputable shop and make sure it is of a later batch (over 4xxx) and is 6-bit coded.

Even with these features increasing the second hand purchase cost a bit, you may enjoy one of the greatest 28mm lenses ever made for the time while all the others are waiting first for the 28 Summilux to be announced, then for the lenses to become available for order, then for them to reach up the waiting list, then for getting their lens, shipping it back, having it fixed and finally receiving it to use, …

Think about at least a year from now, until you could possible enjoy a 28 Summilux before it ever realistically materialises (if it really does as so far it is nothing more than a rumour).

The 28 Summicron is a great lens, available now for very affordable money compared to the Summiluxes (think about less than 50% of what a 50 Summilux will cost).

Oh, … another plus for the Summicron - the 28 Summilux with absolutely not fit a 12466 lens hood.
