Quick First Look Review of Leather Holster

I received one yesterday and quickly gave it an unboxing and a tryout. It is nicely made and looks very nice but as someone else said, a little geeky. I will probably return it and wait for the aluminum one. Here is why.

The leather case completely engulfs and protects the camera and has an additional safety measure in a strap that can be snapped over the camera which on the surface looks good. However, in use I found that putting the camera in the case or removing it results in the camera on-off switch turning on the camera and firing the shutter which then results in a 30sec dark subtraction shot if the lens cap is on. The problem is you may not know that the camera was turned on and could run your battery down for just when you really need it to take a shot. If it turns it on when removing the camera it fires off the shot and pops out the flash. Neither good for that quick shot. The aluminum one, leave the upper part of the body exposed but does not have contact with the switch or shutter so it may offer less protection but a better experience. I won't know until I get one.

Maybe there is a way to solve this problem and in all fairness I haven't had it long enough to look for one. However, I thought I would pass on this quick look to help others considering this holster. As I said the quality is very nice and the lining is soft and just what you would want caressing your T. :)

John -

Your comment suddenly engendered an image in my mind of T owners with belt holders being arrested for indecent exposure.

Maybe the guy on the left in Adam's photo of the three people in the subway had a T hanging on his belt.

I have looked at the holster design a bit more and played with adjusting it to different lengths to see how well it can be made to work. Interestingly, it does have an indented area where the shutter button portion slides in the case; however, it still will turn on the camera and trip the shutter on occasion. Perhaps as the case gets used that would happen less frequently. The belt is adjustable enough that you can have it down to waist height but it is located slightly forward of your side so when walking your leg hits the bottom of the case. The best height I have found is a bit higher so that when walking your leg does not hit the bottom of the case. While you could move it more to the side, then when walking your arm swing would hit the lens (maybe not with the prime) so slightly forward works better. Of course having a less than flat stomach doesn't help it to lay as nicely as it could or the guy in the Leica commercial makes it look. :) (A better way to say I am fatter than I should be)

Today, I will give the case a real world try when I go to Laguna Beach (after the President leaves so traffic is less unbearable) and take a few photos. It's too bad there is no place to carry the Visoflex with the holster and you can't have it mounted on the camera.
