Beautiful shots! What a nice animal. I guess he is actually a hare and so more closely related to deer than to rabbits. We have the charming brown hare over here (ex England but well adapted) looking at your photos there is no way they can compete with jackrabbits in the ear department.

Stuart,

these long ears are great, the hare is being kept up-to-date permanently. One can see this very well in the wonderful first picture. Good lighting and a very appealing sight. Here in our region the hare is a symbol of spring, fertility and love. This can be seen in artefacts in some clerical buildings like monasteries and churches. It is very interesting that old local myths are being integrated by the church.

Robert, Steve, James, Mike, Berent, Paul & Dee - Thank you.

Iduna - Thank you. You can often find symbols of polytheism and animism in the structure of churchs, often as sly symbols by the converted. The image below is of a residential building not far from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Yes it's a hare but it much more closely related to rabbits than to deer. Hares and rabbits are in the order Lagomorpha, deer are in the order Artiodactyla.
