35-70 R Lenses or Summicron

Whatever you decide, stay away from the 28-70 "Sigma" zoom. Excessive distortion, rotating head, so-so image quality. I bought one years ago before I knew better, and have regretted it ever since.

... was my only experience with Leica SLRs... years ago at a local dealer I found at a very good price a used R4 with 28-70... I said to myself : "why not ? After all zooming is maybe the strongest advantage of SLRs..." Made 1 roll only... the metering of R4 was at all vague (I discovered later that it was of the "unlucky" first series.. clearly not refurbished) and at 28 the lens was worst than my Summaron 28 f 5,6... not to speak about 35-50 vs. RF Summicrons... luckily the dealer had some LTM stuff I liked to have... he accepted an exchange and I forgot this 2 weeks story...

The 28-70 Vario-Elmar-R is a Sigma designed (built???) lens. The distortion, by Leica's own data sheets, is -4.5% (barrel) at 28mm and +4% (pincushion) at 70mm!. The resolution is particularly bad at the long end of the range (70mm).

Did you have any opportunity to try any Angenieux lens?

Ciao'

No Angenieux , neither any other... as I said, my story with Leica SLRs started and ended in 2 weeks with the R4+28/70 I spoke about... my SLR experience is very limited..3 months with a Yashica FX3 in 1978 (was stolen to me) and a venerable Contarex Super, perfect, with, between others, a splendid Distagon 18 and an Olympia Sonnar 250 at the extremes: great, but almost embarassing to carry with me...is not a discrete Leica RF.. it's huge, sparkling (heavily chromed...) and noisy.

I understand your love for the Contarex system.... I had a full Contarex system, which I traded for the Leica R gear.

I also have the Vario-Elmar-R 30-70 f4, and as everybody else says, it is nice and sharp and delivers beautiful colors.

However I tend to NOT use it so often. I have small kids, and I like to get very close, but not so close that MACRO is required. With the min focusing distance of 0.6 m, I just can't get close enough with this lens. For this purpose my Elmarit-R 24 is my favorite.
