tadeyev Posted June 1, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 1, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just a silly question, but it seems strange to me: There are many 240's for sale all over the place from the Internet to dealers. One that I have seen at Schiphol airport has been there for 6 months already, untouched. I thought there were so many delivery issues, but I guess Leica is pumping them out at a good rate now?? Advertisement Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Hi tadeyev, Take a look here Why so many 240's for sale?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
DigitalHeMan Posted June 1, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 1, 2014 There are a couple at Schiphol airport that have been there for a while as you say. I would like to think that it is because most discerning photographers, when making such a purchase, would rather go to a local dealer than buy it at an airport without any personal service or ease of support. Btw I am surprised that Schiphol are still trying to shift Leica gear - I heard from a good source that they ended up selling a lot of their Leica stock from last year (including the S and S lenses) to a local Leica dealer at a discount as they weren't able to sell it to travelers. With the other cameras, I think most likely Leica has fulfilled all of the orders and now has ample stock available for new customers.
smb Posted June 1, 2014 Share #3 Posted June 1, 2014 I would think that many of the people who purchased the M9, M9P, & the MM are satisfied and don't feel a need to upgrade. And, there are many people who did not purchase a digital and are satisfied with the M film series as they don't take enough photos to justify upgrading. Could we be discussing market saturation? lethbrp Posted June 1, 2014 Share #4 Posted June 1, 2014 I don't think an M is an impulse buy from an airport. I moved from Nikon gear to Leica and I haven't regretted it one bit. You loose the long lens stuff, but the upside of image quality more than compensates.
RobinAK Posted June 1, 2014 Share #5 Posted June 1, 2014 Regarding Schiphol and other airports, prices at airports for anything other than liquor, are almost never cheaper than "Main Street"; companies like B&H in the US and Vistek in Canada always offer better prices. the best one can do is 'save the tax' i.e. VAT, GST, HST, PST or whatever is added onto an item at home. bephoto Posted June 1, 2014 Share #6 Posted June 1, 2014 Simply most dealers are drowning in M and S bodies all over the world. I think Leica produced way too much cameras

When the VAT is 21% that saving can be considerable. However airport shops within Europe no longer have that privilege since the EU came along, as all intraEU travelers have to pay VAT. The prices at Schiphol are competitive though, and you can save over the street price.
sahe69 Posted June 1, 2014 Share #8 Posted June 1, 2014 How much are they asking for an M240 at Schiphol (incl. VAT)?
DigitalHeMan Posted June 1, 2014 Share #9 Posted June 1, 2014 How much are they asking for an M240 at Schiphol (incl. VAT)? I'm passing through on Wednesday and can check, but last time I looked they were only selling the M in a kit together with a 35mm Summicron for (I think) 8450€ - and that is part of their problem they don't sell, by selling it in a kit they are expecting a buyer to be looking for the lens as well as the body. They also had the M-E and the MM available as body only, the 90mm Summicron, accessories such as the EVF, and the complete range of compacts including the x2 a la carte. I remember the price of the 90mm being 2699€ which is very competitive.
jaapv Posted June 1, 2014 Share #10 Posted June 1, 2014 How much are they asking for an M240 at Schiphol (incl. VAT)? In general they don’t charge VAT (destination outside EU)/give a 20% discount on RSP (destination inside EU) at Schiphol. Making prices very competitive. ppolla Posted June 2, 2014 Share #15 Posted June 2, 2014 Am surprised Leica allows Schiphol to sell at anything less than normal price... I thought their pricing policy is no discounting!
tadeyev Posted June 2, 2014 Author Share #16 Posted June 2, 2014 I originally mentioned Schiphol only in terms of availability, that the 240 was there in the store for a kong time. But as already mentioned above, in actuality, all goods in Schiphol are not really tax free. It is really cheaper to buy in NL at a store and export it. They only give a small discount (sometimes!) that might be useful for those living in EU without recourse to official export.
Guest Posted June 2, 2014 Share #17 Posted June 2, 2014 Interesting - if true. Why don't they lower their prices then? That will happen in September or whenever the next model is due. Leica always do this . Originally very scarce which helps create demand,as the orders are fulfilled the product becomes more available.New model becomes available so small discount to clear old stock. Leica are primarily in the business of making money, making cameras in just the means. Nothing wrong with that. Brianp
sahe69 Posted June 2, 2014 Share #18 Posted June 2, 2014 Am surprised Leica allows Schiphol to sell at anything less than normal price...I thought their pricing policy is no discounting! Regulating reseller prices is against the EU competition law. All Leica can do (at least officially, that is) is to give price recommendations. I'll be probably getting myself an M at the end of the summer/early autumn and as I'm visiting Holland every now and then this might be an interesting option.
