Herr Barnack Posted May 1, 2014 Share #1  Posted May 1, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) This will strike fear into the hearts of frugal wives of Leica connoisseurs around the globe: Filson has forged an alliance with Magnum photographers Steve McCurry ad David Alan Harvey. This collaboration has resulted in the new lineup of Filson/Magnum camera bags, available beginning May 1, 2014:  Necessities, not Accessories: Camera Bags designed by the Pros - LightBox and Designed by photographers, for photographers | Filson  Be still, my fibrillating heart! Advertisement Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Hi Herr Barnack, Take a look here New lineup of Magnum camera bags from Filson. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
philipus Posted May 1, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted May 1, 2014 I saw this too. They look nice, though the smaller bag is still too big for what I bring with me. Â This also made me wonder if this is the photographer's equivalent of footballers licensing their names to underwear manufacturers.
Herr Barnack Posted May 1, 2014 Author Share #3 Â Posted May 1, 2014 ...This also made me wonder if this is the photographer's equivalent of footballers licensing their names to underwear manufacturers. Knowing what I know about Filson, I don't get that impression. I have had several pieces of Filson gear for many years and can say that their gear is all outstanding - tough, functional, reliable, built to outlast its owner. Â For years, I have bemoaned the fact that Filson has never made camera bags - looks like that is about to change.
aesop Posted May 1, 2014 Share #4 Â Posted May 1, 2014 ...nyet. I decline. McCurry and Harvey should stick to creating imagery.
Guest Marc G. Posted May 1, 2014 Share #5 Â Posted May 1, 2014 Actually the bags will come out on May 7th. I wanted to know about shipping and their Fedex shipping costs at least 170$ :D:D (note: ONLY shipping) Â Gonna try to find a dealer in Germany. Bags are supposed to hit Europe in August. Manolo Laguillo Posted May 2, 2014 Share #7 Â Posted May 2, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've only found generalities about that team work between Filson and Magnum photographers. Where are the bag's descriptions? Thank you! Manolo

Peter H Posted May 3, 2014 Share #9 Â Posted May 3, 2014 There is a reason why they made their reputations as photographers and not bag designers.
Chuck Albertson Posted May 6, 2014 Share #10  Posted May 6, 2014 What's the best camera to get for my Filson bag? Pete.  Pete,  Something bulletproof, like an MP. Filson made their reputation making gear for people heading up to the Alaska gold rush, which is about the closest thing we have to a Royal Warrant around here. 250swb Posted May 6, 2014 Share #11 Â Posted May 6, 2014 It looks like an item from the photographers dressing up corner, when they want to look like an dogged PJ out on the prowl, looking for a scoop....... Â .......and some will take more pictures of the bag and a camera than will be taken by the camera in the bag. Â Steve
Herr Barnack Posted May 14, 2014 Author Share #12  Posted May 14, 2014 Here's a halfway decent photo of the three bags (exterior only, though): Filson - Magnum Collection | Whiskey Grade - Online Culture Magazine  They are apparently not going to actually be available for sale till sometime in June or July, from what I have read... Winedemonium Posted September 8, 2014 Share #14 Â Posted September 8, 2014 So, did anyone buy? Â I'm looking at the Filson Magnum Harvey Messenger bag, and trying to decide between this and a Billingham or other similar robust but low key bag. I find my Billingham Hadley Small is too... err... small. But no one is stocking this Filson in Hong Kong that I can see, so haven't been able to inspect. Â Thanks. Ted Lemon Posted September 9, 2014 Share #15 Â Posted September 9, 2014 So, did anyone buy? Â I'm looking at the Filson Magnum Harvey Messenger bag, and trying to decide between this and a Billingham or other similar robust but low key bag. I find my Billingham Hadley Small is too... err... small. But no one is stocking this Filson in Hong Kong that I can see, so haven't been able to inspect. Â Thanks. Â Yes I got the Filson Harvey Messenger bag recently whilst in the US straight from the store in Seattle. Â My reasons for buying was, firstly, my only other camera bag - a Billingham Hadley pro - having reached its 15 year old birthday had become very ragged and need replacing. Â The other reason was I attend a workshop with D.A.Harvey back in 2005. Someone on the workshop wanted to buy his then bag, which was, according to David, a National Geographic special made exclusively for their in-house photographers. He said, 'one day I will get a bag made which will have two easy reach external pockets to retrieve my two pairs of glasses, an external pocket for my hat, be totally waterproof, comfortable and not look like a camera bag. I also want internal zipped pockets to store stuff like film and memory cards'. I liked the sound of that. Â Well, perhaps unsurprisingly, this bag has all of that. Â I find it more comfortable to wear then the Hadley Pro as it fits around the body easier, the extra side pockets hold my glasses and the small back external pocket holds a moleskin small note book or phone and is very secure. Â The hat pocket is there with a mesh arrangement on the back but I have used this for holding a light waterproof jacket as well. Internally there is a nice sized zipped pocket for cards etc and also lugs for attaching keys or whatever. Â It also has a dedicated laptop slot pocket inside for my 11 inch air book which is very well protected (before I used to have to put the air book into a protective sleeve then jam that into the back of the Hadley). Â The camera insert is two pockets separated by the normal velcro arrangement (which you can obviously configure yourself) and last sunday I did a shoot with my MM and ME in there with 50mm lens on each and it was perfect. Â The wax fabric (Barbour clothes like) feels and looks great and its totally waterproof (got drenched already) the fixings are made of saddle leather and feel robust. Â I am not one for putting up pictures of bags and as you can see from above I do not collect bags - this is only my second large bag over the last 15 years. But as a good alternative to the Hadley (which is also a great bag) then this is a good option. Â Hope that helps.

I can't remember the name of the store but they had the Magnum range in stock when I went there in August.  Note that the wax finish rubs off onto clothing in hot, humid weather  cheers, Jonathan
