Why No Firmware Updates?

The message I am getting from this thread is that there are some features of the X2 and X Vario that aren’t implemented in quite the way some owners wished they were. Maybe if Leica received lots of mails complaining about the same issues then they might be prompted to update the firmware; otherwise … why bother indeed?

Possibly. I wrote them about the wish for a long-term exposure option (can that be implemented with FW? No idea.) and a higher (usable) Auto-ISO speeds for X1/2. No response. I presume the same will be the case for any FW update. None.

But hey, I would appreciate if others would write Leica as well. Who knows?

I am not the complaining type, unless something is broken, and there is nothing broken on the X-Vario that I have spotted!

The two big things for me would be:

1. Be able to define an AEL button (the down button on the direction button could be used, as its unused at the moment!)

2. Fix the bug where even if you turn off preview, the last shot is always shown whilst writing to the card

Probably never sold enough to warrant a update

The camera sure needs an update to bring it line with what other makers are offering

I'll jump in on this senseless discussion.

I bought recently the Leica X1. If you believe the hype, it is WELL overdue for "an update to bring it in line with what other makers are offering".

I knew this at the time, and know it now, but it didn't stop me buying it, nor has it stopped me enjoying it.

The latest and greatest sometimes isn't what I want, however, YMMV.

It's not about latest greatest it is about refining a product and not accepting mediocrity. Updating software is no big deal and is integral in research and development even if the product is superseded. The fuji x100 is a great example of this, years on from 2010 software update plus a TCL-X100 Teleconverter........

Providing updates is a way for a manufacturer to say:

1. We want our products to deliver the best they can given their technology so we can refine and improve it as we learn more.

2. We appreciate your business and want you to come back to us when you are ready for the next step up, and

3. This is a good value proposition because we will keep it performing at its best even as new cameras are introduced. We want you to receive value for your money.

Regarding firmware updates. Does a firmware update reset the picture numbering? I guess not?

There was a M240 one which did reset my numbering by adding to a 8000 post fix. I have seen some others note this but it was not consistent.
