Just search the forum and didn't found any related to blackrapid on new M - since now the tripod thread is integrate into the body, would this strap safe to work on M240?

I just have a scooter joy ride + mountain hiking last weekend with M240 naked using factory stock strap and its killing my neck.

What carrying option do you recommend for 1-lens active shooters? Without being overly protected in a "case"? I may get a Mindshiftgear Ultralight cover for places that is a bit hazards. :)

I'd STRONGLY recommend NEVER slinging a camera on your body when you're doing this sort of sport. The risk of serious damage to you (let alone damage to the camera) is far too great. I'd recommend some kind of bag fixed to the handlebars of the bike - I'm sure there are loads of things out there.

Hmm, I have a set of Blackrapids around the house somewhere. The problem with them on previous models, was the weak base plate in the M8/9/M/E. With the M240, that has been fixed, but a new problem has come up. You need to remove the D-ring every time you need to change batteries/SD cards. Depending in how you shoot, can be quite a problem. However one work around would be to attach the D-ring to the MF hand grip...

Depending on the activity they can be a blessing or a curse. Bicycling is a problem as the camera dangles but walking, it's great. Most problems can be mitigated with a little forethought.

i had an earlier model of the black rapid with a nikon d 3 attached. the camera came off and hit concrete when i sent it to nikon to be fixed they sent it back with a note...beyond repair ...just saying make sure it is secure at all times.

I use a Blackrapid with my canon kit. One issue I have is that the settings on the camera keep getting changed as the camera hangs upside down. The other day I was outside in bright conditions when I had to grap a shot and the camera was changed to f22 at 1/4 second!!! So here is a suggestion:

OP/TECH USA | Mirrorless Strap

A neopreane strap which will flex as the camera moves. It will spread the load and the camera will feel lighter.

As Chris said, DON'T have a camera strap around your neck while you are on the bike or scotter. If the strap catches on anything, you will be beyond worring about the damage to your camera...

I bought a padded back pack when it was on sale from one of those Channel Islands based battery/card sellers. It has padded compartments in it and from memory cost me around £18 reduced from around £45. I use this when I am going on cross country journeys on my Raptor 700 quad bike across mountain and fire roads in France. I used to just use a normal back pack but with the weight/solidity of an M and lens, I ended up getting bruises on my back, when bouncing around. The new pack is much more padded and with the moveable dividers, you can hold everything in a rigid location.

And the strap needn't catch anything to still be hazardous to one's health; any fall could result in the camera/lens crushing a body part. What Chris said.

I use a Blackrapid frequently with my M (and M9 before that). However, I don't use the tripod hole to connect the Blackrapid. Instead, I fashioned a split ring (heavy duty key ring) through the camera lug (and attached the Leicagoodies Sling http://www.leicagoodies.com/ ). I then replaced the heavy duty lock hook on the Blackrapid yzehujyn.jpgwith a lighter weight and easier to use Leicagoodies hook http://www.leicagoodies.com/ This combination has served me well for over 3 years now for walking around. It is strong enough for a camera the size and weight of the M, however, I check it frequently.

Leica M, film & digital, strap lugs are pretty weak compared to SLRs of certain age. That particular arrangement is either very brave or foolish depending on your point of view.

Well, I've used the strap lugs to hold my Leica cameras for decades now. It's fine and as with any strap should be checked regularly.

By the way, I'm curious where your strap is attached if it's not to the weak lug.

Two weak lugs is better than one.

BTW I experienced loose strap lug with film M camera so once bitten...

Understood. But usability and comfort is important too. So far so good for me. When/if a lug gets loose I'll get it fixed. If it breaks... Well I'll get it fixed then too. But if a lug breaks it was probably going to go anyway regardless of the strap.

I use from time to time a wrist strap from one lug on an M but only with lighter lenses. I wonder how much warning you get of a loose/failed lug. Not much is my suspicion.

I use a variety of fanny packs with a wrist strap on the camera for walking. The one in the cheesy iPhone photo above holds an M with a 35 or 50 f/2.5 Voighlander, spare battery and WhiBal. Chrome's Cardiel Shank will hold an M with 35 or 50 Lux, spare lens in a Optech neoprene pouch, spare battery, WhiBal and a small Rocket Blaster.

For cycling, an Acorn handlebar bag with the M in an Optech Rangefinder Pouch wrapped in a large Optech Soft Wrap.

I have a 1" wide Domke Gripper strap on my M240 which works just fine, but I am thinking of getting one of these: Crumpler Industry Disgrace Camera Strap (Black) IDE001-B00000

I tried to wrap my head around using a BlackRapid strap on my M240. I just couldn't get comfortable with the concept of dangling my camera by a bolt that can back out of the tripod socket and result in a disasterous smashing of both camera and lens  and I have no interest in checking the bolt's tightness every ten minutes to be on the safe side.

 I never thought of the danger of hanging a strap while scootering... the fact that we were driving 50mil up and down the mountains (and through the city traffic) does seem stupid to have a strap that could catch on something - ouch, not going to do again!!

Thanks Chris and everyone for the heads up!

I had a blackrapid sport for my Canon and knew it's trading convenient for risk, but now it looks like it is even more inconvenient for M. I too value comfort and usability so Kdriceman did looks really interesting, except I may want to added tether and some safer arrangements... BUT

Have anyone else carry M using just one lug? Anyone know how Leica construct its lug? Since by doing so the stress will be change from bending to pulling, plus it will be much greater (single lug for 2+ lbs).

:) BTW I have backpack and fanny pack already and looking for a strap for active shooting when I left everything behind.

Again, it's not about the strap catching on anything. Rule 101 when cycling is not to attach sharp and/or heavy instruments to one's body….any crash or fall could result in that instrument impaling said body. Same applies to a backpack, etc. Put the load on the bike, not on you.

Can i suggest something a bit smaller ?

i have a few CPS versions of the Industry Disgrace strap (red with canon eos branding) and it is a great strap, well padded and very comfy, but it is overkill for an M, and folded up, the big neoprene neck bit will be an M sized bundle.

will grab some pics of mine with my M tommorow for you to compare.

and the blackrapid straps have a rubber washer to hold the bolt tight, they are actually a very comfortable way to carry a camera, I used one all the time on my work Canons, and still do when shooting out of a helicopter or when i need a safety strap, for day to day use i have a set of Spiderholsters.

I wouldnt use either system on the M though, i feel the M is best suited to a narrow nylon webbing strap - my M is wearing a modded stock strap, i cut the ends off and added a 1" nylon webbing through the middle, replacing the rubber pad

FWIW - you are more likely to have the blackrapid clip undo itself than have the bolt unthread

i havent had a bolt come loose yet, but have dropped a 70-200, and almost dropped a 1d/16-35 when the clip "capsized" and opened the gate

@Echo63,

Your custom strap looks very similar to what I currently have on my M240: Domke 1" Web Camera Strap without Swivel (Black) 740-1BK This strap is narrow but it is not uncomfortable with an M. With a bulky DSLR and a bigger lens, it could be a different story.

The Crumpler is big for an M camera, I will agree with that. The BlackRapid does have the rubber gasket to help keep the bolt from backing out, decreasing the chances of that happening. But the dealbreaker for me is the snap on the strap, which will let your camera freefall to the ground if it accidentally pops open. The R7 strap has the buckle on the backside of the strap, allowing a sneaky thief to come up from behind, unbuckle your strap and run with your camera and lens. That is a fatal design flaw in my view.

In the end, I suppose I will either stick with my Domke or perhaps get a Luigi leather strap.
