I have come to similar conclusions though using manual focus for landscapes and tabulated hyper-focal distances. You might be interested to know that an obvious competitor to the X Vario, the Sony A7R with 24-70 mm Zeiss lens has just been reviewed on photozone.de. It was not that impressive.
