Scratching the LCD screen on the M240??

Recommended Posts

Yes, it must go to Wetzlar; they have to dismantle most of the camera to replace the LCD unit.  Not a cheap repair. If the impact damaged or bent the back of the camera by even a minimal amount, thus throwing the fixation point of the sensor out of tolerance, the rear bodyshell will have to be replaced as well.

When I sent in an M-E for sensor replacement I asked them to fit it with sapphire glass.  They don't offer that service but they did throw in a pack of these screen protectors with the invoice - which are made in Germany.  The best part is air bubbles leach out and disappear after a few days.  Pretty cool.

A jacket with metal buttons badly scratched an M9 which surprisingly bothered me so much I had it converted to a P - which eventually evolved into a 240 - which now wears a protector as well, which itself is hard to scratch and comes off cleanly.

Normal aging like brassing is fine - but anything that can possibly interfere with function is not.

Sblutter - CV8 seems to describe the product but NOT the size or shape - can you give a model#?? A Google search shows model DQCT 130 - is this what you used?? Thanks

I travel a lot with my cameras and my M9 screen got scratched with the seat buckle on a flight as I always have the camera on my lap.

My M240 now wears a leather case with removable rear screen flap. When I am travelling and its not in use the screen is covered with lovely leather and when I am using it I don't worry. The screen seems pretty robust.

I like the thicker feel of the camera in the half case and it smells wonderful when it is held to my eye. I use the Classiccases version which is really nicely made and seems very durable.

  • 4 weeks later...

I had the m240 for most of a year and I don't use case or protective films and I can be rough on equipment. I toss it in backpack and run, carry it around all the time... Never had a scratch on the 240's screen. Sometimes there were smudges on the coatings which aligned along regular positions which might have indicated a very fine scratch or a thinness in the coating but it polished away to invisibility.

When I upgraded to the M-P, I really wasn't worried about the screen. A few weeks later I looked at it and saw a tiny imperfection that wouldn't clean off. No mater how hard I cleaned. I thought something like "so much for sapphire". Then one day the light happened to catch it just right and I looked more closely and even got out a magnifier. It turned out to be a tiny jewel laser cut into the sapphire.

Regarding sapphire, I have only had my M-P for about six months but it has seen some pretty heavy use with no screen protector and no case and the screen is flawless. I do tend to clean it with a microfiber cloth when I clean it, it does rub against my frequently cotton shirts quite a lot though.

For visible signs of wear, the black paint does not adhere to the brass terribly well and so after only a couple of months it starts coming off on the edges.

Yes - but basically brassing is considered desirable. For a long time Leica used soft paint deliberately - and charged extra for it. Personally I prefer the durability of chrome cameras.

I have mixed feelings about brassing. In essence, I feel like my photography is not good enough to have earned the brassing that I have. About 18 months as a M shooter and about 25,000 frames of which maybe 10 are really good is just not enough bona fides.

That's a defeatist attitude. You must become one with the camera.

I like to keep my cameras in nice condition, but I really don't care if they brass and/or pick up a few nicks and marks along the way of being used. After all, I bought them to use them. :-)

I don't know how I'd "break" the sapphire LCD cover on the M-P; it seems virtually indestructible. I can't imagine getting it fixed any way other than sending it to Leica if I did. But ... I will say that I love using the M-D typ 262 more—I have no fears whatsoever about damaging it. I don't even use a half case on it.
