Leica Out of M8 / 8.2 Sensors ??

My frustration isn't over the policy, only the very recent statement, which now proves to be wrong by over 5 years out of the 10. And only a year and half after he said a shortfall program shouldn't be necessary again.

Yes, but hes said that after production of the M8 had stopped. I do not find it too far-fetched to assume that the most crucial parts had become unavailable at or shortly after the end of the production. Hence, there was no way to replenish stocks.

Well it seems M8 users have two options if their sensor packs up.

 

Either buy another working s/h M8 (with warranty) from a dealer, probably for less than what it would cost to have a new sensor fitted by Leica if they were able to, or take them up on the 'trade in' offer against a new camera. The good news is that they would also then have a spare LCD and other parts if needed at any time!

 

There can't be many M8's around with factory warranty left.

I think you misunderstood me.

 

If buying a s/h M8 to replace one with a broken sensor I would suggest buying from a dealer with a decent warranty, just in case the sensor on the new one fails - you would presumably get a refund for the camera as the dealer would be unable to have it repaired.

 

Of course one then has a useless M8 to keep for spares, or yes, trade in for an ME or whatever.

Sure, all the more reason he shouldn't have made my excerpted statements at Photokina 2012, beyond admitting that the LCD upgrade wasn't a good solution, i.e., that an upgrade program shouldn't be necessary again and that the goal was 10 years on parts.

 

If parts had become unavailable by then, then his comments were misleading, if not disingenuous. That's my only beef. My M8.2 has been relegated to back-up status with the M, and I carry comprehensive insurance for any loss, so this is a non-issue for me practically.

 

The fact that nobody else seems to care about the words, then all the more reason he has not to worry about future statements. I prefer to follow the actions, not the words…DMR, R, M8….

 

Of course all this assumes there really is a shortage. I haven't seen reports on the Rumors site.
