Overgaard Posted March 22, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got the Leica R bellows and have played around with them for macro, including with a 400mm Telyt-R as macro lens. Quite interesting. I have updated the article about Leica R lenses on Leica M 240. chris_tribble Posted March 23, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 23, 2014 I think the whole point of this R lens article, from my viewpoint, is that I don't see much need to use the R lenses on the M240. Thorsten - thanks. I couldn't agree more. My experience matches yours - though I've not played with so many R lenses! In the run up to the release of the M I got very excited and got some old Canon and Nikon glass + an R 80-200 f4 and R PC 28. How often have I used these for serious work (rather than testing)? Never. While I don't regret getting them (they're beautiful pieces of engineering in their own right), and while I hold on to the fantasy that I'll use the 80-200 f4 as an alternative long travelling lens, the reality is that when I need a long lens for a paying job I'll use DSLR and a professional stabilised zoom. The one lens which I think will justify the cost of the R to M adapter is the 28 PC. I'm just waiting for the right project. Does this make me regret getting the M? Is live view a complete waste of time? NO on both counts. The improvements in the accuracy of the RF, the enhanced ISO range, and the image quality I get from the M fully justify the switch from the M9. And I DO use the video and Live View for real world work, and I do use the EVF for wide angle lenses in preference to the Frankenfinder. At the end of the day, I have the best 24MP digital RF in the world (because it's the only one ) and I have the potential to use it with all sorts of odd lens combinations if I want to. What's not to like?
jaapv Posted March 23, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 23, 2014 I would qualify the conclusion, Thorsten, as R lenses expand the limited focal length and functionality range of the M system. Having done an African trip including a Safari with the M it has saved me from carrying two systems as I used to do. It may not make much of a difference to the traditional M shooting but it certainly does to those who used to carry both an M and an R in the same bag. jaapv Posted March 23, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 23, 2014 Btw, the Summilux 75 M and the Summilux 80 R are virtually the same lens and draw only indistinguishably differently.
