Light Metering

Recommended Posts

Classic metering is with the shutter down, meaning it uses the three small eyes inside the bay one to measure the reflections on the shutter curtain (the two grey and one white line across the shutter curtain).

When in Advanced Mode it opens the shutter and use Live View to measure the light that the sensor sees.

It's a bit confusing that it has two menus to set for light metering as Classic only offers one method and one area of metering. But it's one of the things you just get use to.

There is an article about it here:

"Light metering in the Leica M Type 240"

You'll also find that the camera is less responsive in advanced mode. There's a price for everything :)

One good aspect of the latest firmware is that in Classic mode, the sensitivity threshold has been raised so that the meter gives useful guidance (rather than saying that the light level is out-of-range).

If you want to see the difference try metering in very low light with Classic and Advanced (matrix). You can get clear indications of under/correct/over at much lower light levels with Advanced. With earlier iterations of the FW this was even more pronounced. Kudos to Leica for listening.

When the metering method in the "menu" is set to classic what happens when you press "set" and choose e.g. spot.

Is it correct the settings in the "set" menu only is active when you in the "menu" have chosen advanced mode, or you have changed to LV?

Hi... I'm new to the Leica family, just receiving my M240. I'm reviewing some old threads ti learn more and came across this question, which I was wondering about yesterday. Looking at the OP's question, your responses were helpful but it still isn't clear. I understand what "Classic" does in the Menu screen on the "Light Meter" Line.

However, if I go to the Set screen and change Exposure Compensation from Center Weighted to Spot or Multi-field, does that override the "Classic" choice?

It is confusing naming one, "exposure meter" and the other, "Light Meter".

Exposure compensation is something different, that changes the bias of the exposure meter irrespective of metering method.

Classic mode reads off the shutter blades prior to taking the image.

Advanced cannot be used in classic mode, and provides spot and "matrix"metring off the sensor with the shutter open.
