SD card stops M9 working - latest advice?

Hi,

I've had the M9 for a while and been learning and enjoying. I have been using a Sandisk Extreme SDHC I 8GB 30MB/s card without any problems until last week. With this card in the camera, the camera is now inoperable in the sense that the LCD is blank and non-responsive to any button and there is no shutter speed display in the viewfinder. There is nothing on the card when I try to read it in a Windows computer and I eventually get a message saying do I want to format the card.

I checked the camera with my other Sandisk card (SDHC I 16GB @ 45MB/s) and thankfully it works! I am running the up to date firmware.

I've read up as much on here as I can about SD card errors, but it is hard to work out what the current state of the art is. Please could someone summarise for me or direct me to the best post? In particular, I would like to know if I can get the last few photos I took off the card some how.

Thanks

If the card doesn't work but others do, then maybe it is broken or corrupt? Maybe you can use the Sandisk RescuePro software to recover the images, but I would suggest you just use another card from now on, or try reformatting it.

In my opinion, its easy to become nervous or neurotic about which card to use. There is no Leica update or latest advice for cards in the M9 except possibly to avoid very large capacity cards. The M9 is not a body under continuous development and updates aren't expected. I continue to use every SD card I've ever owned which include Sony 95mb/sec, Sandisk Extreme 45mb/sec, and the cheapest unbranded, and they have all been used on my Leica, Canon, Sony, Panasonic and Olympus. I think you should treat the unfortunate event as a "one off" and possibly nothing to do with the camera or firmware. One principle I always follow is to never delete intermediate images from my card while its in the camera. ( For example, I wouldn't browse in-camera and delete image numbers 3, 6, 9 from a session of 15 images). I save everything and move them all to my computer.

Your card may have developed a fault and you can attempt to recover your image files by downloading image recovery software. Look here: SanDisk RescuePRO® and RescuePRO® Deluxe Recovery Software | LC Technology International, Inc. or search for alternatives. Until you have made a recovery attempt, do not try to take and add images to that card, and of course, do not reformat.

Hope that helps.

Good luck

Gents, thank you both. I certainly hope this is a one-off and will try not to get too hung up about it. Let's hope that the recovery software helps, but otherwise I'll consign this to experience and move on!

Thanks

What is wrong with deleting some images from the card? I have sometimes done this when the card is getting full and I wish to take a few more pictures. Never had a problem.

Once I have the images copied from the card (a) to the computer

(B) to a WD portable back-up disk

I format the card and put it back in the camera. No problems encountered. Have I just been lucky?

I don’t know. I have been disregarding his particular piece of advice for over a decade and since 2006 on five digital M bodies and three non-M Leicas. I never had any problem caused by the practice. And I clear the card by formatting in the camera - another supposed no-no I believe. Out of dozens of cards I only had one die on me….

Ditto.

It is intended that you delete images with no issues and they expect you to clear the card by formatting in camera.

Like Jaap I have never had problems.

All these ..... and similar issues ....... are almost always generated by card errors ....

I have used SanDisk Extreme Pro (8GB) cards since my MM was new (nearly a year) without problems.

I always delete unwanted images in-camera and always clear the card after downloading images by reformatting in-camera. About every three months I overwright the cards.

I'm also using 8GB cards in a Fuji X100 without issues.

Deleting anything but the last image leaves a hole in the "space allocation" algorithm. The next image may or may not fit the hole exactly. If the image is small, there is a small space and the next image fills the void and slops over to the next available spaces. If too large, it divides into two series of locations.

In either case, fragmented files are produced which may or may not cause problems. I prefer to keep it clean. Download the selected images and just do not download those you failed to delete.

Reformat the card in camera and repeat.

I've been using all types of cards in my MM for over a year (SanDisk, Panasonic, Lexar) without incident, other than one with a sticky write-protect switch. (I've probably doomed myself by making that statement.) I never delete images in camera, simply because it's not a good idea to delete pictures on the basis of what they look like on the LCD on the back of the camera - better to view them on the monitor first. And I swap cards out frequently, so as not to have all my eggs in one basket.
