Herr Barnack Posted March 13, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 13, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) As someone who is seriously contemplating purchasing an M240, I have to wonder about this. Has this situation been corrected or are M240s still coming out of the box with loose strap lugs? Was there a run of specific serial numbers or dates of manufacture where this was a problem? It would certainly suck to get a minty new M240 and then have to send it off for "X" weeks to get an issue like this fixed. I would greatly appreciate hearing from people who have recently acquired an M240 - were your strap lugs firmly attached?

jaapv Posted March 13, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2014 No reports since the initial recall. It appears to have been a batch and long since cured.

hoppyman Posted March 13, 2014 Share #6 Posted March 13, 2014 Yes, a thing of the past. This only potentially occurred with cameras produced before April 2013. Any camera registered in the months following that was checked against the production records and the owners contacted. For example I received an immediate mail that my camera purchased in June last year was not affected.

Any camera registered in the months following that was checked against the production records and the owners contacted. For example I received an immediate mail that my camera purchased in June last year was not affected. Not even that that. I think the total series affected was 1500 cameras. It was simply an error in the production process which was rectified as soon as it was noticed.
hoppyman Posted March 14, 2014 Share #12 Posted March 14, 2014 Yes I'm not suggesting that every camera made prior to that date was faulty. Only that any possible faulty ones were confined to within that period. I only recall I think one or maybe two? cameras reported here as actually having the fault. I don't know how many were sent back as a precautionary measure.
Delcredere Posted March 15, 2014 Share #13 Posted March 15, 2014 No reports since the initial recall. It appears to have been a batch and long since cured.[/quote Alas not so. Both my M240 lugs fell off in Namibia last October. I took delivery last July and Leica confirmed that it was not one of the original batch that was recalled. Leica were very apologetic, could not have been more helpful, expedited a replacement M240 and repaired my R Vario 28-90 free of charge.
swamiji Posted March 18, 2014 Share #14 Posted March 18, 2014 Too bad that delivery time is not really relevant. It's serial number dependent. It could have sat on the shelf.., but in any case it's not a good thing.

It could have sat on the shelf.., but in any case it's not a good thing. In my case Leica confirmed the luggs had fallen off a camera that had not sat on a shelf and was part of a later series than the original one which had, until that point, been thought to be the only ones at risk from the problem. swamiji Posted March 19, 2014 Share #16 Posted March 19, 2014 It's starting to look like we should have a Lug serial number thread, with a list of affected units. Since it seems more than one series is affected.
jaapv Posted March 19, 2014 Share #17 Posted March 19, 2014 These one-off strap lug failures have ocurred on a few M8 and M9 series as well, albeit rarely. I would not call it M240 specific. The root cause is the design, where they are held by a couple of small screws. If these fail, the strap lug comes off. In a way one could call it a fail-safe design. Should too much force come onto the lug, it will break the screw, not the bodyshell. Obviously fail-safe should not transmogrify into fails-spontaneously...
