stunsworth Posted March 14, 2014 Share #21 Posted March 14, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Conspiracy theories are fascinating. Thank you for inventing one. I’m sure you are aware that Shakespeare’s plays were not written by Shakespeare himself but by somebody entirely different of the same name… Does it matter anyway? It's the words that matter, not who held the quill.
Advertisement Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Hi stunsworth, Take a look here new Leica? x vario demolished?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted March 14, 2014 Share #22 Posted March 14, 2014 Exactly my point, Steve.
wattsy Posted March 14, 2014 Share #23 Posted March 14, 2014 Considering the price of the X cameras it is obvious that the component parts (the lens assembly, main board, etc.) are made somewhere in the far East and then assembled in Europe (presumably glued together in Portugal and then given a wipe over by German 'technicians' before going in a box). wattsy Posted March 14, 2014 Share #24 Posted March 14, 2014 In normal practice somebody making a wild assertion has the burden of proof. Indeed, but I think the "wild assertion" is the idea that the X cameras are made in Germany.
barjohn Posted March 14, 2014 Share #25 Posted March 14, 2014 No, I haven't. Have you personally seen them being made in the secret Panasonic factory in Germany? Then, Andy you don't know that you are right and I am wrong. Note, I said I thought the X's were made by Panasonic, I didn't say I knew. You on the other hand, definitively said I was wrong with no more basis than what you think. Perhaps you should have said, "I think you are mistaken as I think they are made in Portugal and assembled in Germany." I think my point is I was not wrong. At most I could be mistaken in my belief. My belief is based on the information in the manufacturer's portion of the EXIF data but that could be wrong too.
earleygallery Posted March 14, 2014 Share #26 Posted March 14, 2014 So no one here knows for certain where the X range are made. What we do know for certain is that they clearly aren't 100% 'Made in Germany' and most of the internals are from the Far East. So far all the Leica's made by Panasonic have had Panasonic equivalents, so on that basis I'd say it's unlikely they're making the X range, although they may - along with other suppliers - be supplying Leica with certain components which are then screwed/glued together in Portugal/Germany. I expect the new T will be similar.
larsv Posted March 14, 2014 Share #27 Posted March 14, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Leica brochure states that the XV is "manufactured in Germany" in addition to "made in Germany" and even more explicit for the X2 that it "is entirely manufactured in Germany". Imho that goes beyond the statement of just "made in Germany". But please call Solms and let us have your findings.

I suspect by 'manufacture' they mean 'put together'.
Steve P Posted March 14, 2014 Share #29 Posted March 14, 2014 Well, in that case I think that the Leica T will be made in Germany. I think that Shakespeare wrote the plays of Shakespeare. I think that Elvis may still be dead.
jaapv Posted March 14, 2014 Share #30 Posted March 14, 2014 Entirely? Sensor? Electronic parts? Everything? I suspect by 'manufacture' they mean 'put together'. Is there any other kind of manufacturing?
earleygallery Posted March 14, 2014 Share #31 Posted March 14, 2014 Is there any other kind of manufacturing? I just checked the X2 brochure, it says "The Leica X2, entirely made in Germany". Whilst manufacture actually means the same, I think the implication is that it's entirely made from the raw materials in house. Now, we know that Leica don't 'entirely' manufacture all parts of the X2, so we're back to the notion that they assemble it in Germany and therefore are allowed to use the 'Made in Germany' tag. wda Posted March 14, 2014 Share #32 Posted March 14, 2014 Does it matter? We have what we have and we either like it or not. Why does it matter?

Apologies for incorrect quote. "Made in" is a wide legal concept. Entirely made in goes beyond that, as well as manufactured. My understanding. Manufacturing from half products sourced elsewhere may still be manufacturing.
earleygallery Posted March 14, 2014 Share #34 Posted March 14, 2014 Indeed, why the disbelief that Leica would make anything outside of Germany? Even children eventually accept that Father Christmas isn't real.
